In an Ideal Scenario I think thats true Howard but aren't we again assuming that these Directors are being recruited for their Knowledge of the Waterways rather than some other skillset

Maybe you’re right - and I certainly wish the new team well.

The very fact that we don't know what skillsets were required or were recruited says a lot about the organisation: lacking focus, lacking a clear strategy.

My first Mini [1964] was a good one, I threw it around more than was wise.  I thought all cars were like that .......... they are not.

I was late on the mini skirt scene,  not suited to a Scottish climate, but by then I had moved "south" [N Yorks]

I remember stockings,............. and suspender belts!

They got a bad press, I had one for work, and it was ok, went anywhere it was asked, and I did not need a sump guard [cf my mini].

Mind you it was just very ordinary in every way. They were changed every two years. I would think they lasted another two, then everything  rusted to distraction.

Many years ago I was given a company car - a Marina! - and despite its reputation I found it not too bad. I then moved on to another organisation and the company car this time was .......an Allegro! Again not as bad as predicted, although it did get better when a sister company bought out a motor dealers and changed the card to Volvo, which was a great improvement.

Subject: Regional Director Appointments - a message from Richard Parry, Chief Executive

Dear All

As we approach the ‘go live’ date of 4 June for our new Regional structure, I am pleased to share updates on the outstanding appointments below.

A message from Julie Sharman, Chief Operating Officer: Regional Director appointments

I am delighted to announce the appointment of our new Regional Directors.  As you know, this has been a rigorous process involving both internal and external candidates, and I’m pleased to be able to confirm the appointees below:

  • Regional Director, London & South East – Ros Daniels
  • Regional Director, Wales & South West – Richard Thomas
  • Regional Director, West Midlands – Adnan Saif
  • Regional Director, East Midlands – Phil Mulligan
  • Regional Director, Yorkshire & North East – Sean McGinley

In addition, I am pleased to add that the Regional Director, North West post will be filled on an interim basis by Daniel Greenhalgh (for up to 12 months).  The Biogs attachment includes further information about our four new starters.

I have also appointed David Baldacchino as Head of Operations Support, Jon Horsfall as Head of Customer Service Support alongside Peter Walker as Head of Technical Support, as previously announced.  An updated Operations team chart including these appointments is alsoattached.

We have established two new permanent posts in areas requiring very specific additional focus:

·      Tav Kazmi is appointed as Deputy Director, London & South East, recognising the scale and impact of London & South East as a region, with many complex challenges specific to our capital city and its surrounding area, and with huge potential opportunities for us to grasp

·      Ian Lane is appointed as Head of Operational Projects in the West Midlands in recognition of the extensive and unique opportunities in the region over the next few years, notably Coventry City of Culture 2021, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, and in the near term the ongoing development of the Roundhouse project.

When the new regions go live on 4 June, Sean and Daniel will take up their new positions in Yorkshire & North East and the North West respectively.  As our external appointees will be joining us during July and August, the following interim arrangements will apply from 4 June until the respective RD joins us:

  • Acting Regional Director, London & South East – Tav Kazmi
  • Acting Regional Director, West Midlands – Ian Lane
  • Acting Regional Director, Wales & South West – Mark Evans
  • Acting Regional Director, East Midlands – Jenny Whitehall

I’d particularly like to thank Mark and Jenny for stepping into these interim roles.

I can also confirm that Waterway Managers Nick Worthington and Jon Guest will be leaving the Trust on 31 May and 30 June respectively, with Head of Health & Safety, Tony Stammers, and Nigel Crowe, National Heritage Manager, also leaving the Trust on 30 June.  I’d like to thank them all for their many years of service.

Denise Yelland will serve as Acting Boat Licensing Customer Support Manager until the end of September, with arrangements beyond this date to be shared at that time.

Julie

Message from Simon Bamford, Asset Improvement Director: Changes in Asset Improvement

As a result of Daniel’s secondment to the Regional Director post, interim arrangements will be in place in Asset Improvement for up to 12 months as follows:

  • John Ward will take on the role of interim Head of Project Delivery
  • Richard Wakelen will take the lead role on Engineering Services in addition to his current role, to become Head of Asset Strategy & Engineering Services

In addition, I am pleased to report that Jason Leach has been appointed as Programme Director for the Unlocking the Severn project, reporting to me.

Mark Stephens and Richard Longton will be leaving the Trust on 30 June and I’d like to thank them for their many years of service.

Simon

Message from Heather Clarke, Strategy, Impact & Engagement Director: Strategy, Engagement and Impact

I am pleased to announce that Stephen Higham has been appointed as Service & Outcomes Development Manager from 4 June.

Andrew Stumpf, Head of Wales, is retiring on 20 July after 41 years of service, with his attendance at the Board reception in Cardiff on 23 May, his last public event.  I’d like to thank Andrew for his very many years of service.  With the creation of the Regional Director posts, the position of Head of Wales is no longer required, with a new (non-senior management) position of Policy & Public Affairs Manager (Wales) created; an external appointment to this will be announced shortly.

Heather

Farewells

As reported above, many colleagues, most whom have served many years on the waterways, are leaving over the next few months. I’d like to add my thanks to all of them – and to those, listed below, who are also leaving the Trust over the next few months:

  • Left 30 April – Ed Fox
  • Leaving 31 May – Ian Easby, Nigel Joyce, Simon Currass
  • Leaving 30 June – Ian Jarvis, Paul Ashwell, Angela Everitt, Mick Crowder

I am sure you will all join me in wishing them all well for the future.

Richard

Laurence,

By posting that here, you have exposed countless people's email addresses, and opened up the possibility of them getting used for spamming.

Of course Brenda Adams was also out of order in sending out a mail like this, with all those addresses showing - one should always used "Blind CC" for that kind of thing, and CRT should get a kicking that their staff repeatedly seem to think it is acceptable.

It would be good to urgently edit your post to remove all those email addresses.

From memory, the main candidate skills required were -

The ability to lead big/diverse teams.

The ability to interface with and influence regional/local government and groups.

One of the major differences from what we have now was the promise of a large amount of autonomy.

As I recall, actual knowledge or experience of inland waterways/boating/civil engineering was not a requirement.

Might have some more info on my home server if anybody is that interested.

Fair point regarding email addresses, but I am curious to know who this was sent to. Is it a CRT internal staff email that has been leaked to Laurence, or has it been sent to a range of outside media and other contacts?

I wonder why there should be such hugger-mugger regarding people's e-mail addresses; after all, most of us have our telephone numbers openly listed in the directory.

Not sure, as  the list has now been removed.

Possibly it included those third parties serving on Partnerships, and maybe some of the advisoiery groups?

Some mails go to all who CRT have registered as volunteers, but I don't think this was one of them.  I get those mails, but don't think I received this one.

Because it opens you up to your inbox being filled by massive amounts of spam.

People actively "harvest" these addresses from posts ike Laurence had made, then use them to bombard you with unwanted mail.

I have not had a phone number in any directory in very many decades, and I would guess that applies to huge numbers of other people, (maybe as much as 50%?).

However phone spamming is less of an issue than email spamming, (though still a problem of  course).  It takes someone a lot of effort and cost to phone 5000 people.  But once they have 5000 email addresses, they can hit them all in an instant, and at nota penny cost to themselves.

It is exceedingly unprofessional for an outfit to do what CRT did here - and sadly their staff do it regularly.  One of their enforcement officers is a regular offender, (an odd thing to say about an ex policeman!).

Blimey, how old are you? I am amazed by your estimate of the number of people who are ex-directory; how do people who want to contact them find out their phone number? I have one friend who is unlisted (a higher-security category) for professional reasons, but as far as I'm aware all the others are in the directory.

Seriously though, thank you for the information. I do get "spam" e-mails"; I also, despite having a "preference" telephone number, receive unwanted commercial calls at the rate of one or two per day. The latter are, to me, far more intrusive; one does not need to talk to the e-mails and they do not interrupt whatever one is doing at the time, one just deletes them.

I think I have almost certainly underestimated the number of people who are ex directory.

This article from as long ago as 2006 says....

Perhaps this is why, according to British Telecom, 48% of all landline users, including non-BT customers, are ex-directory. And the figure has been climbing steadily.

A  decade is only 10  years, and I aleady have 6 of them in the bag, so my claim was no exaggeration!  If, as we did, you buy a house from a Mr Smelly (yes honestly, a real one!), and you take over their number, which was not ex directory, believe me, you do not keep that number very long.  There are some wierdos out there!

so undoubtedly it is well above 50% in 2018.

I don't think anybody teaching in a state school would choose to be listed for example!

When we moved and had a house built in 2005 we never had our phone number listed - we were not even ex-directory.

The only people I would wish to contact me are those that I have given a number to.

In 2012 we decided to have the landline removed and use only mobiles - so how do people contact boaters who only have mobiles ? ( as there is no directory for those)

An interesting point - I don't suppose they can. I'm sure (well, nearly sure) that, when mobile telephone first came into vogue some 15 or so years ago, some directory entries listed both the proper phone number and the mobile one also.

Like Alan F we have been ex-directory since we moved into our current house more than 20 years ago. These days almost everybody calls our mobile numbers, and we rarely answer the landline phone. I sometimes find voicemail messages that were left weeks ago!  Indeed the only reason to continue having a landline is for the broadband.

On the mobile, when I receive an incoming call the caller's name pops up if they are on my contacts list. If I get a call from an unrecognised number, and I am not expecting a call from someone new, then I often don't bother to answer it - if it is important they will leave a voicemail or send a text message.

I can imagine someone phoning and asking "Are you Smelly?"! We have moved four times since we got married, and have always kept the existing number, but none of the previous owners has had such a memorable name.

I'm surprised by your comment about teachers. I spent most of my career in the independent sector, but my Dad had been in the state sector and he was always listed in the telephone directory; especially when he climbed the promotional lader, he felt tht he should be available in case parents who couldn't easily get into school (for example if both of them worked) could discuss any problems with him. I sometimes had similar phone calls from parents. I acquired an Answerphone so that, if it was inconvenient for me to speak to them at that particular moment, they could leave a message for me.
