Hi,

I have never even set foot on a narrowboat but I'm curious. I am fairly handy with all kinds of mechanical and electrical things and have a garage full of tools.

If anyone has a restoration job on in north Oxfordshire, I may be able to lend a hand; please PM me.

Me, I just like to go boating, but people are drawn to the canals from all sorts of angles and to do all sorts of things. Because my DIY skills are pretty basic, especially once I try to do anything outside carpentry, I am happy for example that there are those who love tinkering around with hulls and engines or have the ability to do a good fit out. I never set foot on a narrowboat until I was 56, and there are some people who rarely do so but have contributed in some way to canals for decades. In fact I seem to recall there's a man very well known for his long career doing decorative painting of water cans to a high standard who rarely goes boating. The various heritage and canal restoration charities/organisations have an army of volunteers doing all sorts of specialised tasks, often bringing the necessary skills from their day job.

Anyway, there are a lot of run down boats about that could do with someone prepared to help fix them up, so you should get offers. If you are looking to get involved professionally, you might find that one of the hire boat companies or boatyards along the Oxford canal would be interested?
