...and pigs might fly :)

it could also do with stating how much notice was required too, or perhaps this will be added to the website if/when it goes live?

Theyve struggled to get any body down there for years, having a hiire fleet there for a couple, made it look good , but now you have to book!!

Wait for the £10 booking fee like Rembrandt Gardens

The better half said similar, make it a silver propeller to encourage folk down, then make it harder to go there

  • 2 weeks later...

We just met a wide beam on the straightened section of the Northern Oxford just north of Willoughby. We got past, just, with some vegetation rubbing down the side of the boat. The owner didn't seem to have great control and was last seen heading off with lots of power and bow thrusters. It would be interesting to watch him try and get through the bit just before Braunston junction.

Cheers Graham

Ooh crikey yes, if there are boats moored nose-to-tail on the towpath side and a couple moored at Midland Swindlers. It's one of those bits where, even in a narrowboat, you hope that nothing comes the other way.

Just been passed at Buckby by something vast and hideous, next door said it had gone past the night before too. Didn’t understand quite how as it came from the direction of the tunnel.

Hopefully they will report the clear damage they inflicted on the canal system to crt, as evidenced by the damage to the handrails of the once shiny slug.

What sort of English is that? It's up to the recipient to decide whether a reminder is kindly or not. In this case the recipients appear to be "boating customers", whoever they are.

Who writes this tripe?

As its the first notice I have received like this one can only assume (dodgy move) that all the other reported movements were not logged with C&RT

That's probably about 4 miles - are they planing on moving at less than 1mph?  ?

Their plans are one thing, what they could actually achieve may well be short of expectations.

Incidentally I'm guessing you meant planning, as I don't imagine any craft could plane at 1mph.

Chugging from the Blue Lias to Radford we passed a fat boat moored below the Two Boats, plenty of room for a narrowboat to pass, but then below Bascote we met another fat one, so I guess it could have been interesting both below the Two Boats and the Blue Lias bridge today.

Owners of such craft rarely seem to think what might happen when they meet themselves coming the other way or indeed past when they are moored.

We met an extremely fat boat at the narrow bit at the A45 bridge in Braunston. I was ‘in’ the bridge when it came into view. I HAD to give way by reversing astern 50 yards or so. I walked forward and asked if he had registered his voyage, saying he had, I said I thoughtCRT would escort him. He said I told them, that’s it!!

They are such ugly and inappropriate vessels to have on a canal. My opinion.

C&RT seem to just issue a notice to tell us all to be careful like the one posted earlier

My brother, who is voyaging with us, loves them. He’s not a proper boater!! In fact he’s not a boater. Just a passenger!!

Most engineers will tell you that "if it looks right, it probably is right", and I think it is fair to say that these 60'x12' things which have been popularised as cheap housing (with a huge VAT saving on the price of a "boat") look very, very wrong  on both canals and rivers, but then to me the very long narrow boats look wrong too (with the exception of the working type boats like a fuel bunkering boat that passes me regularly). 70' x 6'11" isn't a boat, it's a plank. And on places like the Thames, one or two boats of that sort of length (fat or narrow) can take up an entire town mooring, which is a bit of a nuisance.

I have seen some Irish boats advertised which were "semi" wide which looked well balanced - something like 48' x 9' - the proportions were more or less pleasing to the eye. I suppose they're not popular because they have neither the space of a 12' beam nor the freedom of < 7'

It depends who makes the boat, some narrowboats really do look like sewer tubes! Some fat boats look like they are bricks! However some boats of both sizes have the correct proportions and shape to be things of beauty, as Johnathan Wilson says curves cost money so Johnathan made my fat boat curvy and she is lovely and very spacious inside
