Pop pop mr toad Interesting observation. Mr Google suggests that there’s less than an inch difference in width between those mentioned 4WD cars and a modern Mini.

Indeed, so what we’re saying is that modern cars are much wider than they used to be. Nothing specific to 4WD vehicles as suggested by Roland.

In 1975 my late Father in Law bought himself a new MGB and was surprised to find he had to fold the door mirrors in to get it through his garage doors. He never had that problem with his 1950 Sunbeam-Talbot 80.

roland elsdon
1727 for ‘normal mini ,2019 for ‘sport range rover’ an inch then ? I the current fat mini whatever it is called is wider than a mk 1 discovery. Having said that my garage built in 1990 requires me to fold my mirrors to park in it. But i cant find a decent mk2 escort estate anywhere to put in it. I had to go round measuring small hatches before i bought to get 1 that fitted
peterboat
Its an issue for garages as well with old ramps, when we changed our ramp a few years ago [1 of 3 we had] we realised it was rather wider than the one we took out, caused us some issues to say the least
Lily Rose
I can't fit any car in my garage. Possibly something to do with all the accumulated junk. And half a ton of tins/jars of food. And the beer. Do people really put their cars in the garage? I thought that went out years ago. Or maybe it's just rich boaters (and non-boaters) with double garages. Jen-in-Wellies
A similar thing with supermarket car parks. I suspect that the parking bay widths are based on a very old standard that probably was suitable for a Morris 8 and hasn't kept pace with modern fat cars. Hence the having to squeeze out the doors thing, or seeing cars straddling two bays. Supermarkets want to fit in as many bays as they can and use the minimum space allowed. Edited to add. A bit of googling says it is a recommended size, 4.8x2.4m for planning applications. Some 4x4 tanks exceed it and plenty of what are now small modern cars don't allow a lot of space to get out. Mine is for motorbikes ,bits of engines, boaty stuff and a workbench and tools.

At our last house we had an XJS for a while. The width was tight but do-able but the length was very tight. I put some carpet on the far wall for the car to run up to and then the garage door just touched the rear bumper. For storage I built a 4ft deep (strong) shelf about 4ft off the ground on the far wall, and the bonnet used to sit underneath it.
