The PLA's latest rowing code for the tidal Thames (Putney to Kew) is an exciting read. Different rules for boats rowing with the tide and against the tide, and all fun and games when the tide changes direction.  See page 20 and onwards:  https://www.pla.co.uk/assets/THE_ROWING_CODE.pdf

A sensible WAFI? I am prepared to believe such a creature exists, but you were not the first name to spring to mind :P

Did it hurt having to be sensible? :D

Yes, I had to do what I was told 'cause Mrs Bob was the yachtmaster.?

Not in this case - this is in the area off Southampton water where large vessels are declared in restricted waters.  The yacht skipper got in severe trouble over this.

They were racing!

The racing rules will invariably say the racing boats should not obstruct large vessels so the tanker skippered would just have held course. The yacht deserved getting its mast broken trying a trick like that!

Paaah. Those racing types have their own set of rules! :)

The yacht skipper was a Royal Navy lieutenant at the time. He was found guilty on a number of counts and fined £3,000 plus £100,000 costs. That is a hard way to learn to obey to the rules?

It wasn't just 'racing rules' he broke but colregs, hence the sanction in post 73

Had to cut a path through the little sailing boats on the Severn today. Once we had cleared them their safety boat advised that we should have moved further over to the edge, why they didn't come and tell us this before we got in the middle of them.
