Not the best of wordings I'll agree.

But saying : "River levels are up but the navigation is still open and you can pass through Ledgard lock, but you will need to operate it rather than just going through the open gates" is a bit wordy....

As flood locks are often used to protect a stretch of canalised river then sometimes the flood locks will not be available to use at all.......

perhaps they have now got both sets of gates working, so one can get off the river when it's high. Many of the flood locks on the c&h only have the "outer" gates working so can't be used as a flood "lock", only as a flood barrier.

I thought the terminology was flood locks and flood gates. (The latter sometimes being like the protective gates at ends of aqueducts.)

Since the contractors rebuilt Legard weir 6" too high CaRT have a problem with the telemetry system and the boards. e.g. Battyeford lock gauge is showing yellow when it's low and red when there's just a couple of inches of fresh. This also means Mirfield to Shepton Bridge pound is 6" too high on normal water. Apparently CaRT have no come-back with the contractor so are considering raising the boards and readjusting the telemetry.

This means both sets of gates on the flood lock are needed most of the time. Another issue is the very poor landing stage on the river side of the flood lock that is going to be difficult for all but the fittest of boaters. Seems this contract is going to cost a bit more than CaRT bargained for. Can't understand why they set contracts with no warranty clause. The procurement department seem to be a bit lax. Maybe they should reconsider going in-house for such works. Surely can't be more expensive than putting right these botched contractor jobs.

Yes!

Came through there about an hour ago. Very difficult to get crew ashore and then tie up the boat to help crew open the gate. The landings are right next to the weir barrier.

The flood lock is big too. Took ages to drain and get the lower gate(s) open.
