Rope caught in prop killed engine

Featured Posts

Hi,

A loose rope went into prop nad killed the engine.  I cleared the prop but now there is no oomph forward or back...  Could the damage be limited to drive plate and not (please not) the gear box?  I've previously had 'stuff' caught and engine killed, but before once cleared she started up and had traction.

Any recommendations for boat engineers who are willing to enter central London please? I'm near Kings Cross

Thank you

What sort of boat, engine / drive train ?

Some drive trains have a shear pin to avoid damaging the engine / gearbox (normally found on 'cruiser' type boats with out-drives or outboards)

If a conventional shaft-drive can you rotate the prop by hand without the shaft rotating ? (it could be that the 'key' has sheared off or the key-way damaged.

A bit more info may help diagnose and maybe even be a DIY fix.

BMC 1.5 on a Springer narrowboat

I'm away this weekend but will check when I can back if can rotate prop without shaft rotating - felt stiff ie connected when I was cutting off the rope but need to actually see the shaft as I do it

Thank you for the advice Alan

In which case the presence of a shear pin seems less likely.

The make and model of gearbox is needed for any further constructive comment, as Sam says. A photo of the gearbox would be just as good if you can't find a data plate on it.

Are you sure you got all the rope off and that there is not a bit wrapped around the shaft between the prop and hull.

I was wondering that. “No oomph” sounds like the prop is working but not very well.

Is there a coupling between the gearbox and propshaft? Some of these depend on a cone arrangement to grab the shaft. Can you turn the propshaft without the gearbox output shaft turning too?  Tightening the coupling bolts might do the trick.  Pictures and details of engine & gearbox as staed above would be a great help.
