Huddersfield Narrow canal between lock 31E and 24E

Featured Posts

The narrow is now closed between lock 31E and 24E due to lock 26E being so full of sludge the lock gates can't be opened.Apparently spoil from some building work has washed into the canal due to heavy rain and fetched up in lock 26E.

I spoke to the CRT engineer today, and he said they had no machinery to get into the lock to clear it.He thinks they will have to hire a specialist company to do it.

What with the Marple Flight and the aquaduct collapse on the Shroppie,I think this will be a very expensive year for the CRT.

I realise that CaRT use outside contractors extensively, but lacking the ability to get sludge out of a lock is a bit sad, this is little more than basic routine maintenance?.

Maybe the New Wellbeens trust will do a better job of looking after the wellbeens of the waterway. :D

When I went past last June there was some work being done building up the bank for a drive to a canalside house on the offside in around that part of the flight. The boulders that had been placed were already falling in to the cut and the boat bounced over them with the level in the pound being low. Is this related? I imagine there would have been loose fine material there as well as the big boulders. Is this the same place? Can't remember the lock number. CaRT, or whatever they are going to be called next week should have a claim against the contractors if so.

It's very frustrating for me,having sailed my boat from Furness Vale on the Peak Forest canal via The Macclesfield,The Trent and Mersey,The Bridgewater,The Rochdale,The Ashton, and The Huddersfield Narrow to be stuck so near home.[Huddersfield]The Marple lock flight is supposed to re-open May 4th,but I decided not to wait. The journey is 120 miles and 150 locks and having experienced horrible weather, ice, below zero temperatures, snow, hail, and biblical rain I am beginning to wish I had waited untill May 4th.

The amount of mud in lock 26E has to be seen to be believed, and watching the CRT blokes scrabbling around taking samples for heavy metals and other nasties,in pouring rain and freezing temperatures, fills me with admiration.

There is an update due early next week.

Pshaw!  A dilettante!  I set off last April from Sowerby Bridge, via Calder & Hebble, Aire & Calder, Trent, Chesterfield, Fossdyke, Witham, Navigable Drains, Trent & Mersey,  Caldon, Macc, and Upper Peak Forest and got within 2 miles of Marple when they closed the locks.

And all that on a crust of Hovis and a cardboard box for a cabin, with the dog doing the locks! :)

OK, that last sentence wasn't true. Sorry.

Thanks for your "sympathy" Mac.You will know how I feel, had to do all the locks myself [no dog] I am at the moment home in bed suffering from flu.It started after the freezing Standedge Tunnel.

Maybe it's as well there's a stoppage.Don't think I'd have the energy to do any locks.

Just had a look at the map. That was real tour you had.If you can go that distance, why not take the same route home as me?

Because the dog flat out refused to go through Manchester.

Sounds like a sensible dog.I went through Manchester because I hadn't done it before [wouldn't do it again] At the lock at the end of Canal Street, the one under Oxford Road [can't remember the number] a boat was stuck because it wouldn't empty enough to open the gates. There was drug stuff all over the place, metal spoons syringes, and several dodgy looking characters lurking around no doubt looking for a "fix"Both me and the other boater were quite worried that we could be stuck in about the worst possible place for a stoppage.

It was only by me shoving the gate with my boat and the other guy winding the gate that we managed to open it.I was quite relieved to get away from there.

Well, if I’m going to get stuck anywhere on the system for a little while, Slaithwaite ain’t a bad place to be.

I agree,Slawit is ok,sadly I am a couple of miles west out in the wilds.

My dog is in agreement, there are very few green places to get a run off the lead, in fact its quite hard to find enough grass to have a wee, lots of dodgy people giving off bad vibes, and almost all the pubs are dog unfriendly. The Wharf is the only decent place, the wooden floor is bit hard but if you are discrete you can stretch out on those nice rugs.

Not exactly out in the wilds! One of my favourite mooring spots is The Kettle, just above Lock 31E.  A 5 minute walk across the fields to a bus stop with frequent buses to Marsden, with the excellent Riverside pub, or the other way to Huddersfield. And an Italian restaurant adjacent, out in the wilds.

I think you should be let off the lead more often.

I’m thinking of quoting a price to remove the slugde/shit/silt. I will be that specailist company.

I just need a labourer to help. Any offers?

Drain the pound, I’ll go on the shovel. Just need someone to lift the bucket on a rope and sling the sludge/shit/silt into a crt skip/boat.

Ah, but you're a giant!  You'd have to get Gog or Magog to help you.

i'm intrigued as Lock 26E is two locks uphill from the guillotine lock by Empire Brewery, and the only construction i'm aware of is directly below that one.

I need to pop to the Parcel Office in Slawit in the next few days so i'll go up and have a nosey, not today though as its coming down like stair rods.

I know the bit Jen-in-Wellies means, that's much further up towards Sparth res I think, and looks bloody awful.

Latest update.

Following inspection we have been able to devise a solution to the siltation problems in locks 26 and 25E. We're currently negotiating access agreements with a number of landowners in the area to enable us to mobilise equipment. Our current aim is that we will be able to start dredging the locks early next week.

Hopefully I will get my boat to it's mooring in Huddersfield before Christmas !:P

I’m below the Guillotine Lock if you want to say hello. Bring a shovel. :)
