The Perfect Ventilator

I am moving house (if all the relevant parties can stop cocking up the arrangements).  I am moving to a place that has a MakerSpace not far away.   All MS have at least a 3D printer.  I have never played with a 3D printer.  I would like to have a go.  Yes, I know that most of the effort goes into making them work.

I need a bigger set of ventilators.  I have some UFO ones and they seem not too bad.  I am not sure whether they will continue to be available as I understand that ECS has problems.  But they have some drawbacks.  Perhaps I could 3D some better ones?

The UFO drawbacks:

  • ugly as sin
  • requires far too many holes in the roof
  • uses screws rather than bolts
  • either permanently open or openable & not both
  • vent size small, with bug mesh even smaller
  • only takes expensive fan
  • no neat fittings for ceiling end
  • too short to traverse ceiling insulation
  • does not intrinsicaly prevent roof condensation from around the fitting
  • the SS plate does not drain particularly well and can cause rust
  • did I mention ugly as sin?

The UFO benefits:

  • It ventilates
  • It can be stood on by an elephant
  • It does not trap ropes
  • It does not drop condensation down the back of your neck unless fitted badly
  • It can take the ECS fan
  • It keeps screw manufacturers in business

My ideal ventilator:

  • Gives a lot of ventilation in the one fitting
  • Is variable, but can be easily modified to be fixed open for BSS test day.
  • Has bug screening as standard
  • Does not trap ropes
  • Does not promote rust
  • Has only 3 fixings (or none at all) at the standard UFO points
  • Uses bolts rather than screws
  • Has 2 ring seals rather than just one
  • Is easily replaceable
  • Can be stood on infrequently by small people
  • Does not drop condensation from inside the fitting
  • Does not drop condensation from the roof around the fitting
  • Can take many sorts of fans, both round fitting and square, of various sizes
  • Has a long duct that will pass through any length of insulation, tailorable
  • Has a supplied ceiling fitting that is easy to remove for cleaning
  • Can easily take a cable from the cabin to the roof for eg aerial
  • Is still as ugly as sin

That's one of these that you mean?

Yes, they're horrible. When the screws failed and I couldn't find a tap to thread new holes (the remains of the old screws being corroded into their holes) it was replaced by a plastic pudding basin. That was three years ago. Still looking for a better replacement. Let me know if you go into production!

Really?  You only care about correct ventilation for one day every 4 years?

I only care about having enough ventilation for the stove, gas fridge, 4 cooker gas rings, two gas ovens, and Morco all running flat out at the same time, one day every four years.  The rest of the time I use commonsense.  One day I may be found dead in my boat but it will be because I've decided its time to go, but currently my favoured departure strategy is hang-gliding.
