2 Tillers, anyone know why?

This looks like the R&D twin engined narrowboat, certainly R&D features, like  style of rear door hinges. Ray told me the original owner had twin Nani 30hp engines fitted (in tandem, one with longer propshaft) as he was paranoid about breaking down on the Tidal Trent. It has a slipper stern. AFAIK it originally had a cranked connection between each rudder.

R&D commonly referred to the under water stern shape, as in our own Rusty Dustbin as a slipper stern. It is also known as a Cutwater stern. X R&D still refer to it as a Slipper stern.

They may refer to theirs as a slipper stern, but it doesn't make them right.

The boat that started this thread was discussed at length in a thread some years back, and "Keeping Up" eventually talked to the owner and got a full explanation.

However the new "improved" Google based search I have had absolutely zero success in finding the relevant thread.

The tillers are linked, and it has two engines and two props, but I seem to recall only one is functional.

We did once share a lock with it, so it moves sometimes.

Yes it does this is a narrowboat slipper stern. But MTB is always right so there you have it.

Yes it has two engines and two propellers. The tillers are hydraulically linked. but can be separated. On the canals, he uses just one engine; on rivers (which he rarely sees) he uses two. When I spoke to him, one engine was temporarily not working but he may well have fixed that by now.
