Junction Lock River Soar

Featured Posts

The re-opening of Junction Lock on the Soar has been delayed because of the high river levels.

Update on 16/03/2018:

There is major flooding on the River Soar in this area and the repair works at Junction Lock 47 have been severely hampered as a result.

The local team will be working over the weekend and it is hoped the work can be completed, site de-mobilised and the navigation re-opened by 4pm on Wednesday 21st March.

We will do everything we can to reduce this timescale and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Update on the openingof the lock

Update on 20/03/2018:

Further to our update last week, we will be opening the navigation at Junction Lock as expected, at 4pm tomorrow, Wednesday 21st March.

The coping stones still need to be installed and this will be completed once the navigation is open.   The work will be carried out from a craneboat within the lock.  Please be aware there may be a delay of 30 minutes for boats going through the lock to allow us to move the craneboat safely out of the way for your passage.

Two areas of the lock side will be fenced off where our equipment is located but these areas will not affect the operation of the lock

Lock now open. The repairs look OK. All paddles now work.

The broken paddle at Cossington has now been fixed.

However Birstall lock is very difficult to work. The bottom gate we used was very difficult to close - I had to bounce it to get it moving. I wonder if the lock floor is failing again. The offside paddles are not working- the ground one is taped off and the mechanism has been removed on the gate one. The supporting timber for the towpath ground paddle is rotten so will fail ere too long.

The ground paddles at Belgrave lock are silted up so don’t really do anything!

The canal below Lime Kiln needs dredging again we were dragging on the bottom with 2ft9 draft.

on the plus side there was plenty of space on Castle Gardens for us to moor.
