In his book which I'm reading yet again John is heading south on the Grand Union & then down the Aylesbury arm on Redshank & Greenshank loaded with coal. He describes the top lock of the arm as a "riser" several times. What is or was a riser?

When I read it I was also puzzled but then I wondered if he is referring to the two rise staircase  - hence riser?

I have always referred to a staircase lock as 'a riser'

A lock is a rise 2 locks joint a riser. Three is a staircase. Bascote is a riser and 2 rises.

2 lock chambers with 3 sets of gates seemed to be refereed to as risers some folk termed "staircase" as 3/ 5 or whatever risers could well have been /is regional

On the L&LC they are referred to individually as a 2-rise, 3-rise or 5-rise, and generically as riser locks.

That's cleared that up then, thanks very much, its a 2 lock staircase, I've never been to the top of the Aylesbury arm.
