Big sofa, little door...

Featured Posts

I have enough space on board to fit a nice big comfy sofa, but I have to get it in through a tiny door.  The only place I can find that sell sofas that come in pieces is Nabru.  Looking at the pictures on their website, the sofas don't look to be comfy or very good quality.  Can anyone recommend anywhere else to get a self assembly sofa from?

Many thanks.

I'm really looking for something of good quality that looks nice, so Ikea is out.

Why not start by buying a boat with a bigger door, given how picky you appear to be ;):P

Or more seriously, find a sofa you like then get someone like Martin Kedian of this parish to enlarge your door to suit.

Check whether a sofa actually does come to pieces.  When we had a new sofa at home a few years ago, the deliverers took ages to get it through the front porch, including breaking a glass panel. It finally went in with a mm to spare.  Unfortunately they had delivered the wrong colour. When the replacement arrived, the deliverers looked at the door, then lifted a flap on the back of the sofa and took off the back.  Straight in no trouble.  It seems that this might not be widely known.

I bought a sofabed from a company in derby, they delivered for 15 quid, first time they came it would no way got through the doors, they returned a week later and bought the upholsterer with them, they split two joints on the frame, got it in put it back together then the upholsterer re-upholstered it in my lounge and i had to force them to take a tip on top of the 15 quid delivery!

I think Nabru are fine ... I find mine very comfortable and although I weigh in at a tad over 20stone it has served me well for 3/4 years and no sign of needing replacing. BUT do try to visit their showrooms and try one out before taking my word for it

I had a Nabru one & didn’t find it comfortable at all, I was really disappointed, especially as I’d spent a couple of hours putting it together !

Nabru say they have a no quibble return policy & give them their due they collected & refunded me a few days later, after I’d dismantled it......

Went to Ikea, the Ektorp sofa comes in bits & very easy to put together .

We don't have a local Ikea so we don't use them but watching the programs about them on the TV and the testing they do I would have thought them to be quite good.

The quality may be great for all I know, but they don't do anything that fits my taste. I also want something that is made of leather which Ikea don't do, only half leather/ half imitation.

I want something  a bit like this

Have you thought about how cold that leather might be to sit on in winter?

Have a look at Le Corbusier sofas.  We've got one of these and it just fitted through a 22" door opening.

The sofas from Sofabedbarn are often recommended here, but I didn’t think they looked great on the web site..... So I went to Queensbury to have a look and a sit.

They are much better in the flesh so I bought one. Looks great in the boat, and delivered through a small front door.

I don’t think they do leather, or faux leather, so no use to you but, if I were you, I’d get myself to the Nabru shop and see how they are in real life. They may be much better than they look.

You might have to compromise, given that you want a big sofa, but only have a small door.

My wife insisted on two Next sofas, no chance of getting into the boat so un-picked the back cloth, cut the backrest uprights at 45degrees and got the sofas in, then used two pieces of drilled flat bars for each upright, fastened with self tappers and then retensioned and re-stapled the back cloth together, took aboutj20160419_182851.jpg.ea0491f409756ae4f9efe13506ea5c53.jpg an hour each sofa

You seem to have missed the smileys in my post....

Bewsides, there re plenty of boaters out there who are totally loaded and for whom my suggestion is perfectly sensible. And as you said, you don't know the OP's circumstances.
