Oops my bad. Not a term I consider offensive, but clearly someone does so apologies.  I quite like the substitute and also like bowdlerise - I had to look that up. Every day's a school day :)

Two adverts which really annoy me and have me reaching for the mute are the credit score one with the talking dog and also the M and M one with the woman in the bed and her husband arriving home early...arrrrgh.

Cheers

Saw the Nationwide girls singing tonight in Tim & Pru's program.

It's truly awful - Nationwide, what were you thinking?

Quickquid - APR 1295% 118118 99.9,% Loan sharks preying on vulnerable individuals on prime time TV. Makes my blood boil - you'd only pay those rates if you were desperate or with a lack of education to understand the consequences.

On the other hand nobody seems to mind the extortionate rates a bank would charge for a short term overdraft... Often more than a payday loan would cost.

The problem with payday loans is not the interest rates over a short period but the inadequate checks to ensure that the borrower can afford to repay the loan.

I do wonder how many of the people the 'Topcat' advert is aimed at are actually familiar with TC (and its Phil Silvers origins).  Does Topcat still get shown?

That's the biggest thing you wonder about regarding Top Cat?!

What about him being referred to as "Top Cat" or "TC" and the song being "Top Cat...." etc, and yet the titles clearly say "Boss Cat"? Eh? Eh?

Damned nearly ruined my childhood.

The ad companies have clearly won

Indeed. I can still remember adverts from when I was a tiny kid; Hadrian the Deep Gloss Paint, Keep Going Shell, National Benzol and loads more. Advertising works and seemingly irritating adverts work very well.

Yes you're absolutely correct. So do I give up because they're all doing it? The little guy n desperate circumstances is always stuffed? I'd love to make the world a better place but unfortunately it's populated primarily with either greedy or xenophobic buggers.  Basically the good people with a social conscious are being derided as snowflakes and the bullies sneer at those that stand up to discrimination and hatred. I feel incredibly uncomfortable living in this country which I'm incredibly proud and of at this moment in its history.

Any advert for “over-fifties Life Insurance”.

That June who goes round to see the man next door in his conservatory sounds way too enthusiastic for someone talking about an investment. I think there's a subtext there, and who knows what might have happened if the man's daughter wasn't in the house.

it's a sad day when we have to insure ourselves for funeral expenses.   I'm sure the self-satisfied middle class home-owners in those ads aren't living from hand to mouth and don't need it.
