We are currently doing repairs to the Gunthorpe Lock Wedding Rings.  Boaters may experience delays of up to 30 minutes, whilst our workmen clear away their equipment. Please follow advice on site.

Maybe I'm slow today, but I can't work out what "Wedding Rings" were before the spill chucker got at them.

The official notice says they are

 

(the brackets around the top of the gates where they are held against the hollow quoin)

 

but I have never heard them called wedding rings!

I thought they were simply called straps.
