Amongst our weaponary....the comfy chair

Featured Posts

We are looking for a couple of comfy chairs for the boat to replace the rather naff Ikea jobbies we are currently using. From searching the internet it looks like we are after a swivel/recliner type but really need to try some out. There are a couple of boat furniture vendors in the Midlands area advertising in the boat mags so wondered what the experience is on here? Chair size is obvioulsly the main limitation and the smaller ones you find in mainstream furniture places arent too comfortable. Our current chairs are 27" wide and not a lot of room for anything wider. Also getting the chairs in via the cratch will be limiting.

Any good recommendations?

I bought 2 reclining swivelly things from Harveys - material rather than leather ... only 250 quid each and came flat packed in a box... needed to be unpacked outside the boat but fitted through the side hatch bit by bit.

They're comfy enough and very easy to fall asleep in.

Thanks for that. How big are they? I guess the width is the key measurement.

I dont have a measure to hand but  we have them both ways (side to side on starboard ) or one each on port/starboard and they leave about a 9 inch gap between which leaves us enough room to walk up and down the boat without moving them/the people sitting on them.

In summer I admit, they are back to starboard - no one ends up in the "hot seat" near the fire then lol.

have a look at first furniture. They are half the price of Wilsons.

To be fair to Wilsons, their Captain's chairs are real leather whereas the recliners that are half that price on the First Furniture website and other discount retailers such as Recliners Direct are bonded leather or leather effect. Recliners Direct real leather Elano , Wilsons type chairs, are more expensive than Wilsons.  There's nothing wrong with the bonded leather ones; my current ones have lasted 15 years and are now ready for replacement. Whether I'll pay the extra for real leather this time I haven't yet decided.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Very useful.....and interesting to hear many of you are going for 'bog standard' (including Bizz's chair:)) chairs ex cheapo furniture shops rather than the specialist places. We have been round a few cheapo shops ...and the stressless chairs...but were not that impressed with the comfort on some of them. We are tempted to go and try out the two specialist 'local' shops, viz Elite and Wilsons.....so any comments on those two establishments? Is it worth visiting them? Any negative comments?

How about a pair of these, ''The Royale''. They would give great happiness, peace of mind and security. You could sit on them for ages and ages without getting up.

Keep up Bizz!! We are after ones that recline and swivel. Otherwise it looks fine:banghead:

I had a pair of leather recliners from oriental leather:   'sales@oriental-leather.com'

They were very helpful - sent me some samples of the coverings in different types and colours, and measured the size of the bases so I could make sure they fitted the space.  Delivered flat-packed and easy to assemble.  Good price too, and they were doing a discount code that knocked 20% off.

We have a pair of ekorness stressless recliners. We have had wilsons and others. These are superior in leather quality and comfort by a country mile. Don't cough at the price they are worth it. We kept an eye out on fleabay and a pair came up in as new condition for 4 or 5 hundred quid and I snapped them up. Walked through the standard front doors no problem. They do different sizes I can measure these precisely if you are interested.

Can you measure the width. Our current chairs are 27" wide and there's not much room between them so I was thinking maybe 28" is the max width I can have. All of the ones I am looking at from the links above seem to be 30". Maybe 30" will fit. We are just an normal width nb.:)

These are 30 inches wide, they do bigger ones but these are 30 inches. There is zero problem getting them in the boat and if there was then the arms simply and quickly come off making the chairs much narrower. Is you problem that you want them side by side in the saloon? we don't need to do that but I see what you mean.

The Wilson's Captain's chair is stated on their website as 29" and that they can fit side by side in the narrow. Recliners Direct list the same chairs as 29.7". I am currently looking at replacements for my 27" chairs to also fit side by side and limiting the width to 30" based on that information.

Thanks for that. Yes we have ours side to side across the cabin (as it is too hot with the ecofan:giggles:  to have them both on one side in the winter) so need a gap to walk through. We'll revise our max width up to 30'' then! The 'stressless' chairs look expensive so will have to be mega comfortable.

Let us know how you get on in your search. I think we will try and get out and check out a few more cheapo furniture shops, find someone selling stressless and maybe go over to Wilsons/Elite in the next week and see how comfortable all these different chairs are.

I’ve bought about eight stressless chairs for my boat (when I had one) and my home. Obviously I think they are excellent.

The chairs can be ordered in four different types of leather, with different prices. The cheaper leathers have a more hard wearing finish that withstands oils and stains better. The most expensive leather is warm and soft but is more sensitive to oil, sweat and stains.Choice of leather can make quite a difference to the overall price of the chair.

Each model of chair comes in three sizes. It’s worth spending a lot of time trying the different models and sizes.

Ekornes, who make Stressless have now introduced a leg comfort system where a pad to support the legs comes out from the chair. This saves space as no footstool is needed. I haven’t tried this, but it may be better suited to the confines of a boat.

As has been said, the stressless chair is shipped in a box and assembled by the retailer. There is a video of this on the ekornes.co.uk web site.

Although in the showroom the chairs are generally priced with a foot stool of the same design, it is possible to mix and match a chair to a different model footstool which is what I do.

Stressless have a list price for their products. Retailers will give at least 25% to 30% discount off list.

Sherborne fireside chairs are also very good (with a footstool or pouffe) so long as you can find one not in granny fabric - just spent the last 5 years with one of these bought for £40 as new on pre-loved very comfy and practical as they take up a lot less floor space.
