I just cried out an experiment, pointed the camera at the clock and as the second hand was at the top switched the camera on took a photo as fast as possible, the second is with the camera on but not focused, pressed the shutter fully down as the secont hand was at 12 o'clock

Tried to give away my Olympus 0M-10 a few years back. No takers.

My films cost about 3 quid for 36 exposure. You still cannot beat a proper foto taken on proper film. You can give your Olympus to me no problem :)

I use a cannon bridge camera got a decent zoom on it and works well as a point and shoot, I was bought it as a present a couple of years ago and sold my DSLR shortly after as i found i never used it ... if i want to frame a shot and use a tripod i can do that with the bridge camera, i also have a table top tripod so can sit it on the hatch, but to be fair if i am on the move more often than not i just use my phone to take "instant " pics and if i want to take video i use an action cam, brilliant bit of kit for attaching to a bank stick to check the prop as well.

I'm after some advice/recommendations about a suitable camera please, and I was wondering which cameras you find the best for boating.

Firstly, I want one which takes a shot virtually straight away. You all know what it's like, you're travelling along and suddenly you come upon something you want to photograph. You grab the camera but even when going only a couple of miles an hour by the time you get it in position it's either too late or the desired shot isn't as good.

I currently have a Panasonic and there is always an annoying 3 second delay between pressing the button and it taking the picture, by which time there are trees in the way or the view has gone. I know this can happen in poor light but even when the light good it is nearly as slow.

I'm looking for a camera in the price range of between £150 and £200 and one which can also take short videos of decent quality too. My priority is good 'still' photos so I don't want a camcorder, and I want a camera which takes better photos than a standard android phone.

Searching the internet the cameras I've fancied have fairly good reviews but there is the occasional comment that there is a delay in the shot being taken, so I obviously don't want to have the same problem again.

My Panasonic Lumix FZ200 takes a lot less time  than that to focus and can be had for around £150 used on eBay. Mine was nearly £300 when new.

It's quite bulky as it's a 24x zoom bridge camera but it can be operated with one hand if set to iAuto which makes it ideal for boating.

With your budget I think potentially most if not all will have a noticeable delay if buying new.

That looks quite a spec

It is a well specced camera and takes great pictures.

It is a little bulky so I've just bought a pana lumix gf1 used on eBay to supplement it and carry with me on holiday.

That cost me £135 with a kit lens. It's micro four thirds format, something I've not had before.

Nor do the fotos from a proper camera.

Advantage of digital of course being that if you do get any duff ones you can delete them rather than pay to have it processed and printed.

Given you now have a proper phone I'm surprised you are still faffing about with an antique camera.....

I am not conned into everything new meaning everything better. Years ago we had lots of solid fuel stoves in house, all ripped out and modern gas heating fitted, guess what is the " in thing " at the moment........did you fit one recently? Remember when cds came out? The saviour of the music industry, so much better than vinyl will nut jump or skip....like hell and guess what has become the latest gimmick......yep shelves again stacked with turntables in leccy stores and vinyl being the " in thing " again. Remember diesel cars being sooooo much better etc etc and guess what happened to their sales last month now the reality is out.................need I carry on? How much money are you willing to bet against me that in approx. 20 years time celebrities will be appearing on telly etc having paid x number of pounds to have a real foto taken on a real camera by one of the new wave of " specialist " photographers who use " Film "...................................

You need a half frame camera like an Olympus Penn, you'd then get 70 odd exposures instead only 36 from the same 35mm film.
