Remote oil filter kit!

Featured Posts

Hi all.

Every time I service my Beta 50, that comes with an acoustic cocoon, I subject myself to a certain amount of squeezing, grunting and indeed bloodletting in the quest of replacing the oil filter.

Anyone who has the Beta, knows that the oil filter is tucked right down on the right bottom of the engine and necessitates getting into the starboard swim to perform the task, with the acoustic cocoon, this task is made even more difficult as the cocoon sides are close to the filter and makes the task nearly impossible!

At some distant time on this forum, I seem to remember a thread about putting the oil filter in a more convenient place. Does anyone know of a manufacturer of a kit that would do that?

Thanks for your interest

Can't really help, there probably isn't an official one but generic parts intended for other engines might well fit, try looking at the "go faster car" companies like deamon tweeks. Only downside is that you will have hoses and connections carrying engine oil under pressure and catastrophe if they fail. I used to run a remote oil filter on my old VW camper and did worry about that, but driving whilst watching the oil pressure gauge is dangerous.:D

Thanks Dave.

At the moment it's not the oil pressure gauge I'm worrying about, its my portly body's ability of getting back out of the swim, that's firstly on my mind!

If you can find a kit I'm sure you could source some quality high pressure hoses.

The racing people will almost certainly stock suitable hoses, with nicely swaged on connectors.

I had mine made up by a local hose specialist and it was quite difficult to find a rubber hose that met the pressure and temperature specs with a decent safety margin.

Racing people do love to have their hoses wrapped in nice looking steel braid which does provide some protection from abrasion but also means that you cant spot potential degradation of the rubber itself.

Another advantage of a remote filter is that you can mount it in a sensible orientation rather than upside down or sideways as they so often are on modern engines, so less mess when doing the filter change.

You can also do a calculation to trade the cost of fitting the remote filter against paying a thin and flexible youngster to do the filter changes. :D

Health warning!  This does not answer you question in full.  It is just an idea to float.

When I worked in the haulage business (nearly 40 years ago now) we had a remote, extra by-pass oil filter fitted to our trucks to extend oill drain intervals.  When we had Grebe built we had a by-pass filter included for the same reasons.

You will still need to change the main full-flow oil filter but can probably extend the intervals for that.

I have a Beta BV1505 in my boat, and Beta sell a remote oil kit for that so I would expect they will have one for your engine. It may not be the cheapest option, but everything needed was in the kit, and fitting it was not unduly difficult, plus the folk at Beta are exceptionally helpful if you need it.

I have the same problem - and that's without a cocooned engine. Mine sits just above the engine mounting rail, so it's impossible to get a filter wrench / giant 'socket' / whatever onto the small slot. Knowing Beta - if there was a solution they'd have done something....

Bother! just seen Col_T,s post above....

We tried that when I was at work carrying out regular oil sampling etc. but never came to a  firm conclusion on whether it was worthwhile.

We were never sure either.  The boss said "we're havin' em, so change the working practice on the service bay routines to suit".

It must have been a big filter on those rigs!

It was on diesel generators on unmanned platforms. Basically a Ford lorry engine with an external oil tank feeding the sump via a level control valve, so its a constant top up system. To do an oil and filter change required flying a maintenance team over so if you could reduce oil changes  per year there would be a big saving. We fitted the bypass filters to one engine and then sampled oil on a regular basis. We only ever fitted the one as we didn't come to any firm conclusions

You should be able to obtain a remote kit from Beta, around 18 months back I fitted a remote kit to a mates boat he obtained from Beta he had a Beta 38 but ISTR it's the same kit I fitted in a place to allow him to use a longer filter element & fitted it with the filter vertical so oil didntt run everywhere on unscrewing the filter

Thank you

That's another suggestion for Betamarine, I'll give them a call on Monday.

I also await a reply from Speed flow who sounded interested and if they can do it, maybe substantially cheaper than Beta.

Will will see!

Now thats interesting, but I doubt i'll have enough room facing forward either.

Good bits of kit are those sound cocoons, but at times they can be a bitch!

Still, given the time it takes to change a filter against times I enjoy quiet cruising and , of coarse, creeping up on worm danglers, i don't suppose it's bad!
