BMC 2.2 starter motor needed

Bmc 2.2 info needed

Featured Posts

Hi i was hoping someone will be able to help me find out what starter motor i need for my bmc 2.2 in my narrowboat. I have recently had the starter motor replaced but they have put the wrong motor back on it and they dont have my original motor still to get the part numbers from. If there is anyone that can point me in the right direction of what motor i need to find or even better if anyone has one for sale it would be most appreciated.

I am sure a BMC specialist will be along shortly but it may be useful to take a look at the following link https://www.asap-supplies.com/media/faq/133000-BMC-2.2-Manual.pdf  . It states that the starter motor type is a Lucas M45G and if you look this up in Google you will find a number of refurbished units listed on ebay and a new unit from http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/110443-starter-motor-replaces-lucas-lrs124-m45g-1898-p.asp  .  There is also reference to a new part number equivalent which may increase your options.

Please do not buy one based on my suggestion, definitely worth checking with your engineer first (that assumes you have somebody assisting you).

M45G is the general design of the starter motor and there will be variations in the details like the fixing holes, position of solenoid, and number of pinion teeth as someone has already pointed out.

The 2.2s I dealt with used a multi-plate one way clutch on the pinion while the one illustrated above has a sprag clutch. This may just be the wrong illustration  or it may be a later modification so is correct.

I regret that I do not have any part numbers.

Sound advice.  It looks as though the old unit is key to resolving this.  Doesn't the old one belong to you if you have been sold a new unit (unless you agreed a part exchange)? Has the fitter disposed of it or are they planning on getting it refurbished/keeping it for their own stock?  Probably worth challenging them as it sounds as though they have left you in a difficult situation.

I thought I had sent a post here a few days ago but forum doesn't seem to have listed it!

I'm away at present but can probably  find a part number for these motors when I get home next week.

I can probably help you with a complete starter motor also, but again, when I get home.

Tony Brooks comment above is spot on, M45 is the general design of motor, (4 1/2 inch diameter) but each application is unique to each type of engine. They vary by number of pinion teeth (normally 10 or 11), mounting flange, and orientation of the solenoid, even sometimes (on vehicles) between LHD and RHD.

I know from bitter experience that the Land Rover M45 motor is similar but will not fit! However the BMC 2.2 and 2.5 motors are definitely interchangeable with each other, but not with the BMC 1.5/1.8.

Hope this helps, David

In my experience Calcutt Boats know exactly what part goes where on the BMC engines.  That would be my first port of call if I wanted to buy a new one.

I am not so sure about 2.2s and 2.5s although the boss, like me, probably remembers them from his youth. Certainly for 1.5s and 1.8s.
