so ************** what?

perhaps you've missed the point - as a result of the ex-mayor's efforts much of Bristol, especially the central area, has been made very (too much IMHO) cycle friendly.

or are you just looking to be controversial for the sake of it?

Not at all. I had interpreted your comment as one praising George Ferguson.

any praise was unintended.

20mph limits in residential areas and bust shopping areas was a good move, but cycle signs painted on the toad surface every 100m on many roads was ridiculous and has given cyclists even more reason to act like arrogant a**holes.

Hi - been following this thread with some interest as am planning to visit Bristol next summer. Just wondering what the deal is with the tidal part from Hanham to Netham locks. Do you need to phone or book to go at a certain time or can you pretty much just turn up? And should you prebook moorings in the floating harbour?

Cheers!!

Its only semi tidal, so the tide comes over the weir on Spring tides only, check the tide tables and don't go down close to high tide if its a highish tide.

Not possible to book moorings, just turn up and take your chance. When leaving Hanham lock phone Netham lock and they will be there to collect your money (its not manned full time). Its much easier and nicer to pay at Netham rather than having to go over to the Harbour office when you arrive.

ah great - that sounds much easier than I thought it might be. A bit more like going to Gloucester than Brentford :)

Have not done Gloucester yet, its always in flood when we try, but from what I have read Bath to Bristol is easier, that Gloucester lock sounds a bit tricky.

On a sunny day the Bath to Bristol trip is rather splendid.

Netham lock is left open during normal daylight hours.  The river level is maintained by the weir on the main stream just below the junction at Netham Lock.  Unless there is a very high tide (when the level overtops the weir and creates a back-flow) it is only used as a controlled entry point into Bristol docks/harbour.  I believe it is routinely closed at night.  There is a big sign asking you to stop and report to the lockie.  If he isn't in then phone the number on the sign.  Nothing stopping you continuing into the city centre - you will probably meet a harbourmaster's launch somewhere en route - hail him and tell him you are a new visitor.

Yeah, but it takes ages for him to turn up so phone when you leave Hanham, you might even get a better price from Netham than the harbour office, and the Netham "office" is rather nice to visit, sort of lost in time. Bristol Harbour, Liverpool docks, and the Anderton Lift/River Weaver are three real highlights of the canal system. Done all three again this year.   Birmingham has its good bits too, and Cambridge,  ooooh I like boating.

You will only need to book ahead for the harbour festival weekend, look on line for 2018 date. The only free moorings at this time are towards the lower end of the harbour with a long walk if the ferries  have stopped and you do not get power or water locally. Always check with Neatham before leaving Hanham lock as it is not easy to wait above Neatham lock if it is closed, this can be several hours or much longer if the river is high
