Engineer near Hanwell?

Does anyone know of a decent engineer in the Hanwell area who’d be able to put a BMC 1.8 engine back together? Timing chain tensioner has gone ‘ping’ again, some unscheduled valve/piston interaction has happened resulting in us going nowhere.

Any recommendations for someone who could resolve this mess back into a working engine very much appreciated... at least we’ve broken down outside a pub - small mercies!

I have a low mileage works reconditioned 1.8 - ( BLMC "Gold Seal" Replacement Engine) - taken out of a Sherpa van MoT failure some years ago. It was acquired, after test running in the scrap vehicle, to be marinised for a customer who later changed his mind and went for a Perkins 4.108 instead.

If you would like to ring me on 07553 294325, we can work out a delivered price which will probably be well below the cost of rebuilding your wrecked engine.

A lot quicker too, especially as the existing one is going to need careful inspection. Pistons hitting valves rarely goes well

Thanks for the responses, we’ve managed to find someone to take a look in a couple of days time. We’re hoping it can be coaxed back into life to run for another day and a half, which is all we need to get home. After that it’s definitely new engine time!

Day and a half, probably cheaper to get someone to give you a tow

Best of luck with that, . . but if that hope is based on advice you've been given, then I have to say that whoever has given you that advice could well be encouraging you to squander a sizeable sum of money on "get you home" repairs that may or may not last for even the day and a half's running you need to get you there, and is not really doing you any favours !

When the timing chain tensioner failed and the valve timing went out of sync with piston travel over TDC it is almost certain to have resulted in some 'top-end' damage, . . unless you are extremely/unusually fortunate, and the engine was idling at very, and unusually, low revs and on the verge of stalling.

Depending on the rpm at the moment the tensioner failed, you can expect to find any or all of ; bent pushrods, bent/cracked valve rockers, bent/damaged valves and guides, damaged valve seats/cylinder head, and damaged piston crowns.

As 'Ditchcrawler' has already suggested a tow home is your best course of action. I would be inclined to start bowhauling in the direction of home, . . . somebody is sure to take pity on you and offer a tow !

You missed off bent con-rods.
