Our new adventure day 2

So, last night, after a day of rain on our journey from The Wey Navigation to Brentford, we stopped just before the Hanwell flight. The flight consists of 8 locks in close succession. We found a charming little pub (the fox) within a very short walk where we got some much needed grub. Having been fed we made our way back to the boat to have a relatively early night.

This morning, we set off relatively early (09:30ish) on our voyage up the Grand Union Canal. We were a tad apprehensive on the approach to the first lock as the Brent river emerges with the canal and is known to deposit a large amount of silt in this area. Luckily, it was clear this morning and, as an extra bonus, the locks were in our favour. After lock 2 we realised that there was another boat behind us one lock down so we waited for them to join us. It's always nice to travel with someone else in a lock flight as it halves the work! This couple, as it happens, are also moored on the Wey Navigation so we are relatively neighbours. All was going swimmingly until we reached the second to sat lock. When we got to the lock, there was a large wide beam waiting to go into it. Unfortunately, the action of filling the lock up had made the wide beam get grounded! Despite all the effort to try and get the boat off the floor it wasn't budging. Being a totally brilliant person that I am offered to go to the next lock and open all the paddles to get a serge of water into the pound and lift them off the floor. Thankfully it worked and everyone could continue on their respective journeys.

After stopping to do some shopping and grab a sausage roll from Tesco we carried on up the canal. It has to be said, it's not the nicest part of the trip. When you travel through Southall, Hillingdon etc, it's so full of rubbish which is such a shame! It becomes a place that you want to get through very quickly rather than take your time to enjoy.

We are now moored just above Denham Deep Lock waiting for our roast dinner to be ready. As we moored up, the heavens opened for about 5 mins but it's now a very lovely evening. We were lucky with the weather today as, although it threatened to rain we only had spits and spots! We even managed to put the umbrella up using our super duper unbrella holder that we purchased at the Crick boat show (so it wasn't a waste of money!). Who knows what tomorrow will bring? All I know is, at some stage, it will bring wine, beer and/or scotch! BRING IT ON!
