Original message:

Due to very recent water losses to the summit pound it is necessary to close the summit pound, there will be navigation restriction between lock 16 and lock 17 every evening between the hours of 6pm and 8.30am the following day.

This is to ensure that there are no accidental losses or misuse overnight and to help maintain and reserve the pound levels.

Our engineers are investigating possible causes of the loss.

Hopefully we can expect water levels to be back to normal soon then.

The fact that it is persisting down at the moment (at least it is here on the Thames in Oxfordshire) shouldn't be doing any harm.

It's more to do with leaky pounds isn't it? We are going back up the Aylesbury arm tomorrow and seems some pounds are. Overflowing whilst some are empty.

We went up from Cropredy to the top pound on the Thursday, returning on that Friday, and noticed that the water level was rather low (perhaps seven or eight inches lower than normal) though we only once experienced any difficulty even though our boat has a quite deep draught. There had been a sustained dry spell prior to that, so obviously the recent heavy rain has done some good.

I suspect that there's a correlation between the low pound level, the long dry period and the fact that harvest has either started or crops need to be got ready for harvest...

Either way the pound is sufficiently low that we can't get off our moorings.
