Mooring overnight on GU into Birmingham

If you're at black boy I'd carry on the way you are. Personally find it a more interesting route that way. Either carry on into Birmingham (plenty of moorings) or we've moored at top of Ashtead locks overnight. Bit of a building site at the moment but sale enough. Alternatively carry on to Salford Junction and moor at Star City (secure pontoon mooring). Easy reverse back to the junction from Star City.

That almost sounds like a plan.

Not researched the centre of Brum. Is it easy to find a berth there? Recommendations.

There are lots off moorings in the Centre of Birmingham, if you come in on the Worcester and Birmingham, go on through Gas Street basin to Old Turn and the better moorings are on the Main Line there.  You would then reverse Back to Old Turn to go down Farmers Bridge, but if you don't fancy the reverse about a 1/4 of a mile on the Main Line there is a basin on the right and side you can use that to turn round to go back to Old Turn.

Thanks John. Yes we ended up in Gas street basin, but no space to pull in so round onto the main line ....and quite a way down. Should be fun reversing back to the Old turn! I do need some practice reversing. It was a pleasant trip if ...but quite long with a couple of stops to let the dredgers finish.

If you have time you could still turn round, winding hole at end of boat club moorings, and go North Stratford.

We did that when the hire boat ahead of us lifted the top gate of the first lock above the Black Boy pub

As I mentioned if you don't fancy the reverse just carry on the Main Line and in 5 mins or less you will come to a basin that you use to wind, or you could go on a few mins further and go round one of the loops and use that to turn round.

Are they dredging on the North Stratford?

Yes, just noticed on the map there is a basin very near. I may try a reverse just for the heck of it.

Yes, there were dredgers in 2 places about a mile before Kings Norton junct. They were saying up to 30 mins delay. We had 20 mins to wait at the first and about 5 at the second. Some really shallow water at the edges.

Hockley Port visitor mooring

Richard

This is true for the northern end of the jewellery quarter around Warstone Lane and Vyse Street.  Be aware though the you'll need to climb over a 3-4' high railing to get off the visitor mooring, unless you have a special key.

Hate to say this but .......

Catherine de Barnes to Drayton Manor is do-able in a fairly long day but did you know that Garrison Locks are closed by one of C&RTs Summer stoppages?

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/10486/garrison-flight-lock-1-lock-3-lock-4-and-lock-5

It means diverting via the Aston Flight giving a longer journey + 12 extra locks which would make it doubtful.

Suggest it could be done by carrying on to the Facilities block by Tyseley Top Lock and overnighting there.

Not the prettiest of spots but is behind a secure C&RT fence

Geoff

Phew, was worried for a minute then, but we won't get there until early August

and just to add to the misery, when the Garrison route reopens at the end of July, they block Ashted locks for most of August so to get to Brum via the GU means a trip via Salford Junction.

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/10492/ashted-lock-4

Which nobody would do unless they are keen to do lots of locks, as the North Stratford route would offer an alternative

Yes, Camp Hill Top Lock has those moorings behind the fence and next to the facility block. If Garrison Locks are closed, I suppose the route via Digbeth is open where there is the 6 lock climb to Aston Junction after passing underneath the railway tracks, and also passing the heritage Proof House building. Then you have Farmers Bridge and at the top, Cambrian Wharf is still popular with the boaters. Further round by the ICC, mooring close to the Fiddle & Bone used to be an option, but since it has been adapted as gin palace, the stop is not the same, in my opinion. Also there one encounters the kamikaze cyclist, who make any walk along this stretch of the towpath difficult. Whilst the Flapper at Cambrian Wharf, is popular with the young and often has bands on there, it is also not far to walk to Broad Street where there are many more drinking establishments. For the real ale people the nearby Prince of Wales in Cambridge Street remains popular.
