The sun is setting over the BCN on this exciting first day. Fear not spectators, another fun filled day of frivolities is un-planned for tomorrow.

Who is in first place is anyones guess. One thing is for sure most of the competitors will be moored near a pub tonight. Not us. They'll be  shut when we finish.

Was the head gasket fixed? Yes sort of.

We are now going back up Walsall flight because we were stuck in the second bottom lock We had planned to do 100 locks with a two man crew and were just about in track to do it before the same lock that ended our challenge two years ago struck again. Now we'll do whatever we need to do to get from Birchills to Oldbury by tomorrow afternoon.

Effing great. The pound above is wide enough to turn Vulpes but it ain't deep enough. We will have to go up six locks backwards in the dark.

Bow hauling,  stupid numbers of locks, miles of canals traveled,  bottle of whisky finished by the naughty gang, bed now and a stupid early start

Oh and almost everyone snoring

Night all

Oh and to add many laughs and giggles throughout the day

Bugger, Is it because you are too wide or some bastard has chainsawed the arms off again.

Don't know. Never had trouble in other locks and the gate was a foot off being fully open. Tatty Lucy seems to have wriggled through.

Nope, also failed to remove obstruction behind bottom gate. Could just about move it with boat hook but can't grip it and if anything made it worse! No chance of anyone getting through now so reversing up behind you!

We've stopped at Sneyd and I have just served our evening meal that I intended to cook at about eight. Atlas & Malus are here. They had the only legitimate mooring by the service block so we have are probably moored somewhere we shouldn't be!

Not good. Have you got a plan for mooring? If you are heading the same way as us stick it alongside ours although you might have to put lines across to the bank cos we are only little. We are in the arm at Sneyd behind Atlas and Malus.

I have to say the people of Walsall are fantastic, some guy waking up the towpath spent ages helping us remove Vulpes from lock 7 so we gave him some cash and he pulled a bottle of whiskey from his bag and offered us some but we refused. Then when we were struggling to wind in the pound someone from one of the apartments came down and gave us some cans of beer to cheer us up.

CRT are coming out Sunday to look at the gate as I called the emergency number when we thought we might be stuck in the lock all night.

Capt Pegg, your nemesis was a car battery, which fell to the magic keb of Tawny Owl.

We still have problems because there's now something in a bottom paddle on No 5 stopping it from closing, so the plan to come down and then go back up is in question.

Seen on Twitter that Cape Vernum has sunk☹️ Crew safe but absolutely gutting for them. Feel so sorry for Darren and his crew.

Terrible news. I’ve email John Carrington so he should be aware.
