Gardner
I have an CAV axial starter motor fitted to my engine but I am having trouble due to the pinion being badly worn. I believe the model to be a BS5. The current pinion is made of brass/bronze and is approx 4" long and has 13 teeth. Has anyone out there got a spare for sale or can point me in the direction of someone who has ?
Tony Brooks
Try Sir Nibble of this forum - PM him. Otherwise I am sure Thames Valley Electro Diesel in Reading could help as could any of the autoelectrical rebuilders who deal with truck equipment. I know where there is a couple but off a 6-cylinder Gardner - may be some use ? maybe parts interchangeable ?
john4647
I think what you need is a 5549-306D pinion (from a fallible memory) try Wood Auto sales@woodauto.co.uk about £25. If you need a workshop manual send me a pm.

South Shields (Tyne & Wear) I'll message you with contact details - 3 are for sale, 2 from 8 cylinder Gardners and 1 from a 6 cylinder Gardner. Gardner
Thanks John 4647 that is exactly the one required. Wood auto unfortunately out of stock at the moment but having the correct part number is very useful
Flyboy
Not cheap but may be a possible source. http://gardnerspares.com/product/bronze-starter-pinion-13-tooth-for-u6-clockwise-standard-rotation-engines/
croftie
May be worth a post in the vintage engine forum >> Gardner forum to see if anyone has spares or other ideas where to find one. http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/pinions--drives-177-c.asp do list 11 tooth ones so maybe worth giving them a call to see if they have any 13t versions.
