Old Ford 1.8D Engine Problem

Featured Posts

hello i have an old ford 1.8D engine from a MK6 Escort, MK2 Mondeo. the engine won't start as the fuel pump has gone but this dual pump is proving hard to come by. i have sourced the same engine but a little newer and the guy reckons it will fit the same mounts but he isn't sure about his fuel pump he said i might have to do something or buy a different kind. any ideas or will the fuel pump that comes with the engine be fine to use on a boat?

I'm more confused because he's saying he's sold a few of these engines for boats and he seems to think the fuel pump on the engine will be no good for a boat but i don't know why

this is the engine in the boat19022541_10209566188164715_1874777004_o.jpg.30d651bb2c7af6a02234e13ce88a24e7.jpg

this is the fuel pump

and this is the engine I've found

Not a great hands on expert with Fords, but does that engine say "Endura" on the top?...that was a rebranding of the last generation of that engine. When you say fuel pump I assume you mean Injection pump. At least some of the Endura engines had an electronically controlled Injection pump so require an ECU and associated sensors to work correctly.

Its a good engine but many say that engines with timing belts are not ideal for boat use. All the big marinisers choose to work with "industrial" rather than automotive engines.

How about an electric pump.

thanks for the reply I'm having issues sourcing a new fuel injection pump for this engine and i don't want to buy the wrong one haha. if anybody happens to have any idea what fuel injection pump i could use that would be compatible with my current engine that would be great :)

hi thanks for the reply, the current engine in the boat doesn't say endura but the engine I'm looking at replacing it with does. that would explain why he was saying the fuel pump might not be ideal. thanks for clarifying that.

if i can just source a fuel injection pump that would work for this engine that would be ideal. ill try searching fuel injection i haven't tried that cheers

These people are the marinisation experts for Ford engines - they are very approachable and happy to 'talk' (they helped me out with advice on my 'Twin Ford Engines' set up)

thank you ill take a look.

I can not see why a marginalisation would NEED a different injector pump unless its as DMR says. I can see that some marinisers may adjust the pump for marine use to de-rate the engine power. The advance - retard system might also be adjusted to make it easier for the engine to deliver power on idle.

If its a fully mechanical pump I think it should work well enough.

Going back to an older fully mechanical pump is the way to do it. As I said, I don't have the comprehensive hands-on experience of this engine, but you will need to check that the old and new pumps do interchange, you might just need different injectors, and in the worse case the drive gear/pump mounting might not be compatible.

There are always a few folk who like to rid engines of electronics so a good search of various Ford forums might just be usefull.
