Your boat's appearance must have raised the tone of the show. From the synopsis which I have just read, just about anything would have raised the tone of the show.

I have to confess that i find it very disturbing that there seem to folk around  who have so very little else to do that they would look at a television schedule , see a programme titled " On benefits & 30 stone " , and think " oh happy days , thats my evening taken care of " . It beggars belief .

How can you find my comments disturbing and yet watch a television programme in the name of entertainment ( or was it an educational programme ? ... i doubt it ) that is blatantly just taking the piss out of overweight people who get by on state benefits ?

I fail to understand how my comments " disturb " you but the content of your chosen tv viewing doesn t ? Anyway im off to the naughty step to to think about my bad attitude

cheers

Here are some benefits that you may have got from other peoples taxes that you got without even realising it.

Primary and secondary education. Health care. Even if you go private for these it is likely that many of the teachers, doctors and nurses you used were trained at the states expense.

Your bank account still having money in it when banks and building societies go bust. A tax payer funded guarantee of the first 70k or so of your savings.

The roads you drive on, pavements you walk on. A considerable subsidy to the "privatised" railways.

Law, courts, police to enforce criminal and civil law and a Parliament to set them. Saves having to hire thugs to go beat people up who have wronged you or taken your stuff. Less likelyhood of being beaten up yourself. Armed forces to go beat up foreigners and prevent foreigners beating up you. Nukes to incinerate foreigners after they have incinerated you (not so sure that is a benefit)!

A lot of these benefits are invisible, but still there. The richer you are the more you benefit from them. They help you get richer and keep the money. Generally ignored by those who go on about (poor) people on benefits and watch poverty porn shows.

Edited to add: Not forgetting the 15 years of government grant from Defra to CaRT, subsidising canals for our boats to float on.

Absolutely bang on . Have a big fat greenie .

All this ive never claimed benefits willy waving is dreary . Ive claimed benefits- in my early twenties , in the early 90s i was on UB for about 5 months . This doesn t make me lazy , it doesn't make me a scrounger . We pay our taxes so that we may live in an organised society , the benefits are eloquently listed above .

Amongst the " advantages " is financial help to those who struggle . Without them me , my two brothers & single parent mother wouldve been completely f***** in 70s Britain . Yes things may have gone too far .... maybe , but i find the idea of sitting in front of a television watching the poor of the UK struggle in the name of entertainment utterly utterly shameful . They wouldn't make such programmes if no one watched . Its the equivalent of watching bear baiting or cock fighting .

Think about it ... u just gave up an hour of your life to sit and watch & be " entertained " by a so called documentary about " poor people " .

Atrocious !

Instead of bragging about your time spent never claiming welfare benefits why not spend a moment to consider how fortunate you are that youve never needed to .... YET . Not everyone in life " gets on " - some struggle . Instead of watching them on TV - pointing the finger & laughing at them why not count your blessings instead . Far more worthwhile in my opinion

Couldn't agree more. I was unemployed for four months in the 1980s. I spent my time looking for a new job -- but I was young, well qualified and highly motivated (and successful). Without wishing to sound patronising, I recognised how many people were not in my position, which was why I went on a demonstration against mass unemployment three days after my job offer.

Some people have good reasons for being on benefits.

I went on benefits when I was 28, I am now 47, my wife Paola went on benefits when she was 21 she is now 40.

At the time I was working as a computer consultant she was in college, then the illness started, two words you really do not want to hear when it comes to a loved one in the same sentence incurable cancer.

I had to fight the government to get Paola on disability and I quit work became her primary carer, I was in hospital at her side for 8 hours a day and 4 hours a day spent learning all I could about the horrible illness, I had to choose between paying an electric bill or spending the money on train fair to the hospital she was having her radiation treatment (lets put it this way it took me 6 years to clear our debts)

So the last 19 years we have fought this illness and now the Doctors can do no more, even on benefits we do a lot better now due to us not drinking/smoking/going out or owning a car, we budget long term, that is how we afforded to buy Kathleen, Paola loves boats and I love Paola, any time she has left can be spent on the canal painting, taking pictures.

Oh I am 20st 6ft2 although that never stopped me pushing her for 8 miles along the canal in her wheelchair :)

Yes there is a lot of people on benefits who should not be and it makes it harder for those that really need it to stay on it, every time they bring in new rules we are treated like criminals I basically have to prove my wife is dying.

I was always a big lad loved my food but when Paola got ill eating became a comfort, at one point I was close to 25st, if some thing really bad happens in your life like being completely helpless as a disease destroys some one you love we all have our release, I do not drink, smoke or go out partying, food became my solace, happily I have slowly lost weight for the last 2 years and even though still 20st I am in a much better place.

But when you see some one really overweight it is very easy to make assumptions
