Canal & River Trust are pleased to announce a new freight operation on the Aire & Calder Navigation. The operation is due to start week commencing 20th February between Fleet Lane upstream of Lemonroyd Lock and Goole. In the initial stages we are expecting approximately 2 freight barges per week.

 

Any skippers planning passage on the Aire & Calder Navigation who require information on freight barge movements can contact the NE Administration team by calling 0303 0404040 or by email at the following address enquiries.northeast@canalrivertrust

Great stuff. The barges were very much part of the A&C's character when we were cruising it frequently four or five years ago, even if they always made us feel a teensy bit vulnerable in our 24-footer.

 

de-mothballed (if that's a word)?

 

It is now! Just as well it wasn't already in use as a term for the balls used to de-moth one's wardrobe, though, or you'd have been asking about the potential de-de-mothballing of dormant boats. Which would just be silly.

It's sea dredged sand from Albert Dock Hull to the former Fleet Lane oil terminal at Woodlesford which is to become a readymix and aggregate terminal. Two barges (one from Humber Barges Ltd and one from Branford Barge Owners) will be used, each doing one trip a week initially then building up (hopefully) to two a week. This project started around seven years ago with the dredger initially serving the local East Yorkshire market (by road) from around 2015, until various conditions came together to make it work further inland. It's the first stage towards the establishment of the Port of Leeds at Stourton.

That is excellent news, so hopefully the "end" date of 31.03.17 on the notice isn't really the end of this operation.

Good point! I think these ongoing advisory notices are reviewed periodically.

The movement is expected to continue for the forseeable future. I should pay tribute to the way the various parties have worked together on this project for some time, with CBOA being the initial point of contact and co-ordinator. Others include Crown Estate (owners of the aggregate), the dredger company, port operators, barge operators, aggregate merchant , ABP and CRT as navigation authorities, and of course the end customer.

Another movement is expected to start shortly (for the same customer) once the machine is in place for discharge.

There will, of course, be an official press release in due course.

When the aggregate barges were running previously they had a lockie that drove lock to lock in their van so presumably they will do the same again.

 

And prior to that there was a lockie at every lock doing them for all of us.......Glynn at Whitley lock also used to sell us fresh eggs and owt else he had on hand.

A planning application has been submitted to create two new wharfs on the River Aire at Stourton capable of handling up to 200,000 tonnes a year of bulk cargoes such as gravel, aggregates, steel, timber and shipping containers.

The Canal & River Trust has submitted the application for land off Skelton Grange Road near to Thwaite Mills on land formerly part of the Copperworks site.

Dont know George some of it goes by road, however when Goole dock extension happens their will be a big railhead there so that will make a difference.....................allegedly

Saw a couple of gravel barges this year near Strasbourg, ordinary peniches, a bit battered, doing a shuttle from a quarry to a concrete plant and back. probably carrying a couple of hundred tons or so per trip but they were fitted with conveyor belts over the bow so when they arrived at the plant they just plugged into the electric and the boat unloaded itself into a hopper and then belts took it off to the plant , I guess they had hopper shaped holds as well. Clever though.

I am not interested in all honesty in the supposed benefits re road/rail/water transport etc etc. I just love the commercial waterways up north and used to love boating among the big 200 foot stuff rather than just tiddly narrowboats all the time. A much more interesting far more diverse place to go boating than the narrow system all the time. My Old Dad worked barges out of Goole and Hull running to Nottingham and Leeds before the second world war and Ive had an interest in them for a long time. We learnt the hard way not to moor on the A and C mainline overnight many years ago when about 3 in the morning we were knocked out of bed when a loaded gravel barge went through!! Brilliant.
