Following an act of vandalism, all water between locks 87 and 89 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Wigan has been drained, resulting in a navigation closure.

Our teams are working hard to feed water to the area. Stoppages are currently taking place on the Wigan Flight which may limit how much water can be fed to the site. We anticipate that the area may take a few days to replenish to a navigable level.

An update will be issued on Friday 18 November 2016.

Never entirely convinced about all this so called vandalism in Wigan, perhaps fixing the massive leaks would be a start.....

I came through lock 89 on Wednesday, I could not close the top offside/ tow path gate.

 

It only went half way and stopped like there was a mechanical obstruction, reported to CRT.

 

Lock 89 is at the bottom of this set of locks for those that do not know.

I think lock 89 is Ell Meadow lock and is not part of the Wigan flight which is closed at present.
