Are pumpkins the new coconuts?

Cruising down the Tring cutting this weekend and saw lots of floating pumpkins.

Have they replaced coconuts as the votive offering of choice?

Or is there some other explanation?

and yes I do know we just had Halloween, but why chuck them in the canal?

yeah there are loads smashed up on the towpath opposite us I noticed when walking the little man .. I recall a dark black boat decked out in halloween garb moored up opposite last week it had pumpkins on it , I am guessing they had a bit of a party on it and disposed of the said veg over the side as they cruised afterwards . At least its organic and will rot down unlike loads of the other rubbish some boaters dump on the towpath or in the cut . I guess Litter lowts are on boats as well as in cars

Pumpkins being more or less spherical, maybe they were dumped nearby and rolled into the canal.

They're only a small amount of organic matter compared to all the leaves which fall into canals in the autumn, but the trouble with organic matter is that most of it ends up as silt which slowly accumulates on the bottom and reduces depth. I'm told, and I believe it, that because of this some of the places where dredging is most needed are tree-lined cuttings.
