Hi guys I've been considering getting a boat for a while now, however after a walk down the canal the weekend I saw a few people on boats I was slightly put off the idea.

I saw a bloke moored next to a pub hammered on special Brew and playing really loud music.

Then later on i saw a boat coming the other way going full speed rocking the boats moored alongside they were also blasting out music obnoxiously loud. And then I saw another bloke empty ashes from his fire straight on to the tow path.

Also for abouts a half mile stretch the canal stunk of paint stripper/degreaser.

It felt as if the people I saw don't seem to care about their beautiful environment and other boaters.

Was I just unlucky and saw a few baddies or is that the sort of thing you encounter every day?

No its not what you see everyday... your either exaggerating or its a one off occurrence and you were unlucky.

Ok so where you were is quite urban(also The

Dewsbury arm is weird..really weedy and when

I last looked a strange colour....) Go out to Gargrave and

have a walk on the L&L out there...beautiful scenery,

peaceful and quiet.

It doesn't sound like the peaceful spot where I've an on-line mooring. No special brew / ghetto blaster incidents yet away! What are you considering?

The Dewsbury arm is weird..really weedy and when I last looked a strange colour.

Sounds as if some of the people found on its towpath may fit that description too.

You were unlucky. I'm based in West Yorkshire too and while I suppose I must have fleetingly encountered the odd bit of obnoxious behaviour by boaters, no incidents have stuck in my mind because my overwhelming experience of boating has been of quietly enjoying a beautiful environment, which is what most boaters you'll encounter are trying to do in most places most of the time.
