Mooring / Marina near Norton junction

We intend to move our 28' narrow beam cruiser from the river Nene over to the canals next spring. Ideally we'd like to be somewhere near Norton Junction (Grand Union Leicester line). We're not that fussed about electric hook-up, and want to find somewhere cheap but secure. Any recommendations, ideas, comments?

I think your issue will be looking for both "cheap" and "secure". If you find something that meets one of your criteria it will in most cases fail the other. "Secure" will generally mean "with facilities, including electricity", and that will not come "cheap". If you have no facilities, it is unlikely to be secure, although there are a few unserviced offside moorings that might be possible.

I think one issue will be that most (all) marinas on the canal are geared at narrowboats, and you many not find somewhere what would be priced per foot at 28 foot long. For example looking at Crick marina's web site their price is based on

Fees are charged on the greater of boat length or jetty length.

So you would probably be paying for a minimum for 40 or 50 feet depending on their shortest available jetty. Also I suspect some marinas would just not take a cruiser at all.

If you don't want electricity then online would seem to be the most likely option, but then there will not be much in the way of security.

There are some off-side moorings, just south and on the same side as the pub at Norton junction.

Do not know if any spaces available though, perhaps a visit to the mooring (usually someone at least one of the boats) there may help.

Can recommend pub for food and drink. smile.png

Whilst in the area you can visit at least three of Matty's recommendations list

Depending on your usage pattern - a trailer may be an economical way of storage.

Either store it on a trailer at home, giving you the freedom to roam anywhere on the network, or, at a marina with a slipway and just pay 'yard storage'.

If you use the boat every weekend (for example) it may be a bit of a bind to launch it every Friday night, and recover it every Sunday, but, if you go boating for a 'few days' at a time every month then it may be an option.

Edit to add :

Here is a 26' on a trailer.

Thanks to all who replied. I'll have to get on the phone.

Re trailering, we have done it, and love the idea of visiting new waters, but it takes so long to find a launch site, drive, launch, recover, etc. - we're enjoying just turning up & walking on board.
