My Disaster of a holiday.

Featured Posts

I am not the first to complain. There are others that have been paid off to keep their mouth shut. And there are those who refuse to pay their license. What does it take to put on their website the depth of the canal. They probably will not do it because of loosing revenue. I have been told if I make a big enough fuss I would be paid to keep my mouth shut. But that’s not the case I want to use all the canals.

My Norman has an Enfield Leg and a 3 cylinder Kubota diesel which is what gives it the draught of 27". There are thousand of boats out there with Enfield Legs plus all the other makes of legs. Norman made approx 7000 boats of all sizes up to 32ft. Even boats with large out boards can have a draught of 27" I have a Norman 25 with an enfield leg that sits even a little bit lower because it has a Perkins 4108 in it. I also have a Calumcraft with a Sonic leg and a Escort diesel which measures 2ft 6. How did these boats manage to navigate canals if there was not enough water. The CRT want you to use the canal but it is not fit for purpose.

Wrong!

The canal is perfectly "fit for purpose", it is your boat that isn't, as many have said here.

Yeah right!! Who told you that, a bloke down the pub? No chance of that happening.

Refuse to pay your licence and be prepared to lose your boat!!

What are you on?

No one gets paid to keep their mouth shut because they hit the bottom of the canal.

That's life. Get on with it.

Lol so this is what this is all about!

Keep making a fuss then use the payoff to buy a more suitable boat. Let us know how it goes.

Hmmmmmm, from a lot of what I've read on here and elsewhere, including the press over the last couple of years would indicate that in lots of cases they're not, far too often.

Really?

Has someone told you that down the pub too?

If you were to undertake the depth survey of the 2,000 miles canal you demand, I'd be willing to contribute a tenner for your effort.

I expect several other boaters would be too.

But he says there isn't any need to survey them, Mike, because he's read it!

Why would you need this forum or the press to give you that information? What do you find for yourself when you are out boating?

In just 34 days of boating in the 10 months of validity I have had on my current licence I have averaged less than £1 per lock mile for my licence and my relatively deep draughted boat has never got stuck on the bottom away from the bank. It has bumped over a few items dumped in the cut and did get stuck behind a very deep draughted boat once which was one of my more memorable experiences. The canals I have wanted to travel have always been available and in water; with the minor exception of the damage to Spon Lane middle lock on the BCN challenge but that isn't critical infrastructure. So my experience of what I get for my licence has been fine.

The problem the OP has is that the depth of even the dredged channel isn't really the issue. If your boat is likely to be disabled by an encounter with a submerged shopping trolley you will have problems on the canals.

I would suggest a lot of it is user error on the OP's part and not knowing what they can and can't do with the equipment their boat has rolleyes.gif

Our boat is far from ideal for the canals but we manage by using the equipment we have for it's intended purpose.

Some people want the moon on a stick....with a pull cord.

grow up. Most of us have been stuck. Try boating the rivers instead.

What next? 70 Footers and fat boats wanting money back because they can't go everywhere?

Get your head out of your arse. Put it down to experience and carry on...or not.

big baby!
