Bee
If it is a railway item it could be part of the coupling mechanism between wagons, the weight thingy on a turnbuckle thingy that you wind in to shorten the chain, as you can see I've no idea what its called. FWIW I reckon that's the best suggestion yet!
Ray T
Perhaps it was very cold when it was lost and fell off one of these? Edited September 22, 2016 by Ray T
magnetman
Thanks for the pics erivers - looks a good match and it does say LYR on it which is the initials of a railway company Ray T - I was up at 1 this morning looking up nautical terminology and came across the freezing the balls off a brass monkey expression. Apparently the monkey was a brass tray with a pyramid of cannonballs on it. When it got very cold the tray contracted enough to spill the cannon balls. Hence the expression - according to website I found. Dalslandia
Looks like the other end look like a straight crow bar, is it sharpend ?
magnetman
Not sharpened. It has a sort of "shackle' type of shape and remains of a securing pin so whatever it was fixed to it was meant to stay on there.. I think its probably the railway wagon item
