Thanks Laurence for calling me and many others insane for carefully deciding that it's not cost effective paying for insurance that you won't use because firstly, it's only going to be an issue if the damage is your fault, and most historic boat owners are very careful and experienced boaters; second, even if you do damage your boat you are going to want to have a say over the repairs, and a part in doing them, not just send it off to an insurer-approved boatyard; third, insurance companies will go to enormous lengths to wriggle out of paying out anyway (and refusing to accept your assessment of what needs doing and how would be part of that); fourth, historic boats are constantly being repaired anyway, it's not a big deal like it would be for a shiny boat owner; fifth they have less to go wrong/blow up; sixth they have less to steal - would you really claim for a chimney? I think that might come in under the excess. I'd rather save the premium and survey costs and put that towards any necessary repairs/replacements.

The biggest potential expense and ironically the thing that a survey would give an idea of the risk of, is salvage - and my Basic Boat insurance covers that along with third party liability with no survey. HOWEVER I do think the OP has a fair point worrying about fire re a wooden boat. Maybe it's possible to get fire insurance separately, with no need for a survey?

Yes all im really worried about is fire. A £150 chimney isnt worth going threw insurance. Im more worried about arson than me setting it alight as what can i set alight with no fire and no gas.
