Keel Black - Is it any good

A marina chandlery I know quite well had 5 litre plastic tubs of this for sale, they had been there just over 12 months, and the settled 1/3 of black stuff could only be removed with a chisel, not possible to stir back in.

We bought three very large tubs of keelblack (can't remember exact size) when we went to our first crick show, thinking when we got pulled out we would black boat. As new boaters were excited by the ease of using it!

Anyway we got pulled out last year for the second time to black since having boat, having forgotten the first time to use keelblack. We thought we would use it this time however! We had had that stuff for about 3 n half years at that point, but never opened it.

It couldn't be used.

Something in it had essentially 'gone off'. We had a bunch of hardened stuff in the bottom and it wouldn't mix, even when we put it through the industrial mixer we had.

Then read on the side of instructions it said had to be used within 12 months of purchase... Unfortunately we weren't told that and never read the notes. Whoops!

According to Tom Keeling, a surveyor who is well regarded on here the Worcester & Birmingham canal is bad for it

There are more and more converts starting to believe in it, several forum members have suffered from it and as more and more surveyoys, painters, boat yards etc come across it it will no longer be just 'something salty water boats get in muddy harbours'

It is a fact it IS on the canals.
