Good pubs on the Southern Oxford

agree. would not feel safe being in charge of 3 year old and boat in lock.

a few years ago we walked from the canal towards Napton and had a meal at a pub on a crossroads not far from canal and well before Napton. possibly 'Queen's head' but could honestly have been anything. The meal was poor, though I'm not a great fan of pub food so might not be best judge and it's sure to have changed hands as pubs do. Just thought it's in the right place for what you need and might be worth looking at recent reviews.

just checked and think meant kings head. looks as though taken over by a chain and has some good reviews.

I wasn't going to mention that one! We've got in there on a couple of occasions!

agree. love that pub. (bluebell) very busy and people standing in street. when we realised no food and already had a few we asked landlord where we might get food. He gave us a brilliant route to the best fish and chip shop. It went something like, 'go right at the kings arms, but don't stop there the beer's rubbish, turn left at the railway inn but don't stop there either, more rubbish beer. We walked into the, indeed excellent fish and chip shop, to be greeted with, 'you'll be from the canal then'. We were a bit surprised but came to the conclusion not many go to Kidsgrove for their holiday.

And on the other hand, if you live in the 21st century not the 19th and visit a business expecting to shell out £150 or so, it is equally presumptuous of that business to demand you pay cash.

I suppose mention of a bow thruster, electricity on a boat or the bog of choice falls into the same category really. Time and technology moves on!

When I took this business on it took cards and cash. I immediately stopped card payments as I always do. I have only been here just over one year and we have built the business to now need 4 full time and 2/3 part time staff from what was 1 full time and 2 part time and thats in spite of crap wevver. Cash is, always was and always will be King. We lose about 1 in 100 customers now thats all, we have educated our locals now who understand we only take cash.

More power to your elbow, but I think you are being a bit optimistic if you think cash will always be king. Unfortunately cash does not suit the Government or banks, and there are ways of phasing it out, not least by fostering a generation which regards carrying cash as an inconvenience. But don't worry, I'll be gone and you'll be retired before that happens.

Edited to say perhaps not. I've been looking at this and there is a general clampdown in many countries on cash transactions, withdrawals and even deposits.

We holidayed in Norway and people bought most things on card, none of this £10 minimum spend. Even a single cup of tea on the train was paid for with a credit card

Yes - but that's because everything in Norway costs more than £10...

I travel to Norway every couple of months. I never bother carrying any cash.

I went in there about 10 years ago. The bogs utterly STANK.

Put me off the place for life...

Edit to add:

Damn I've confused the Boat Inn with the Jolly Boatman, both at Thrupp. It was the Jolly Boatman with the stinking bogs. My apologies to the Boat Inn. Their bogs are fine!

Indeed, you were in the Boat in 2014.

For something different when you reach Oxford - The Old Bookbinders in Jericho a quirky pub run by a French couple. Excellent food, real ales and service.

Moules & Frites , special on Fridays.

I can recommend the Kings Head in Napton

I can't comment on any other pub as the South Oxford was full and we didn't get to moor within a sensible distance of a pub

A bolt from the blue: The Brasenose at Cropredy is up for sale, or at least its business is. The South Africans took it over only in 2014 and have put a fair amount of effort (and no doubt money) into improvements, so this news is very surprising.

I like the Brasenose but it doesnt suprise me one jot that its up for grabs again. The freehold owner if its not the present operator will want a ridiculous rent and all other overheads are quite substantial. Peoples habits have changed so much in the last few years to the extent that many pubs will never again be a viable business. More and more people now give them a miss and come to places like ours its just the way its going. People actualy now spend time on such silly things as Farcebook and twatter and do not socialise properly face to face anymore.

I go to our village pub about 5/6 nights a week for a catch up and chat with like minded individuals but allas this great social scene is rapidly dying out and crap like I have already mentioned and sky tv etc etc are rapidly taking over.

The pub is owned by Enterprise Inns, but I suspect that the land on which it stands is still owned by Brasenose College.

The stated reason for the sale is that the tenants want to relocate - reading between the lines, I guess they miss South Africa and want to return home, as it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to lave Cropredy to go anywhere else in England. The pub is always fairly busy and often very busy, so I shouldn't think that financial losses are a consideration.

Its certainly the better of the two village pubs I have always prefferd it to the Red Lion although hopefully the new encumbents at the Red Lion will rebuild its customer base against all the odds.

I wouldn't bet on that based on the single visit I have made so far.
