My Ruston & Hornsby could be dead...

Most of the engine is now stripped-down, but the crank timing gear is stuck. Chap has tried everything he can think to remove it, and he has some kit to do it, but it's not moving. Can't get the crank out with it on..

Hmmm. I'd be inclined to be getting MORE heat then. What did he use? It might be an interference fit and heat-shrunk onto the crank.

I'd also be wondering if it was actually still fixed on by a method not obvious to the eye. Do you have a manual which tells you how it is secured?

He has a manual. He says he's going to keep thinking about it.. I can see me buying that fully rebuilt 2vsh I know someone is selling..

So what does the manual say about how it is fixed on, or more pertinently, how to remove it?

If you don't buy the 2VSH, I'll have it!

I have just checked. It says:

Assemble withdrawing tool No. 9750IW, as shown in Fig, 5,

Apparently, you need to draw the gear back by 6-7"

That'll be where he's going wrong then I expect. He isn't using withdrawing tool No. 9750IW.

Maybe Richard would pop over with his and do it...

If I could only remember where it is

The tool bolts onto the inside of the gear and pushes against the end of the crankshaft. It has quite a job to do

Does that just sound like a puller?

No. A puller would pull on the outside of the gear. This is a special tool that fits inside the gear, has holes that match the ones in the gear and has a screw long enough to withdraw the gear

Ok, sounds like i need to find one of them, probably to rent as expect they never come up for sale.

I'll pass on my list of similarly obscure special tools that are nigh on unobtainable if you want icecream.gif

Who are the Ruston specialists for parts?

Spoke to a chap who's rebuilt a vsh, he made a gear removal tool himself using some threaded bar.. Unfortunately the vsh and vth don't have the same size thread so I can't use his, maybe I'll have to make my own too.
