Found this on front page of Towpath Talk. Not quite sure of what they mean by hiring out workboats to their own construction and maintenance teams.

Will these boats now be moved great distances from a central base. Surely better to have each area keep their own boats nearby.

Sounds as though each area will be run as a small business under scrutiny of head office.

I would have said the point is that today the utilisation of the boats is poor, so centralise and reduce the number of boats offsetting the cost of having to move them greater distance to deploy by using volunteers to move them. Seems sensible to me, assuming they can get the volunteers.

It does say `centrally managed resource`, singular. It can`t just be one location. Moving boats great distances can`t be practical and if volunteers can`t be found what then with a boat needed perhaps 60 miles away via 20 locks.

Don't see any reason why you would keep the boats in a single location, there is no reason to do that, but they would need to move further than now potentially if there are fewer of them.
