Output shaft seal for unknown BMC gearbox

Yes, you would need to lubricate the tube regularly though.

 

Or fit the seal groove with a grease nipple, oil or grease the shaft well and fit the empty seal housing back to the box then pump it full of silicone or polyurethane sealer through the grease nipple.

 

Allow to set. The sealant won't stick to the shaft because of the oil/grease.

 

Later in the year the OP could try collecting enough of those hairy caterpillars to just fill the seal groove if arranged nose to tail, legs outward. You would need to bung in a lettuce leaf every night when stopped though.

And a puncture outfit would need to be carried in case a bit of sharp swarf punctures the tube.
