Vetus 42hp - 8500 hours - lots or not?

I once read that the base engine for the Vetus (Mitsubishi S4L2) has a "design life" (for the want of a better word) of 10,000 hrs before it would need work. I assume the "work" to be top end stuff. Great base engine used by other marinisers too. Vetus spares are expensive, but parts for the Mitsubishi base engine are available elsewhere.

If it runs well, starts easy from cold and doesn't smoke a lot chances are it is OK.

Had a share in a boat with a Boatserve Mitsubishi 4 cylinder 1.4 litre. Meticulously maintained. Got to 13, 000 hours before being replaced.

Later has a share in a boat with a Turkish built 1.8 BMC engine. That got to 15, 000 before needing replacement.
