White smoke then black smoke (BMC 1.8)

None of the BMCs I've ever got up close and personal with have had an air filter.

Or rather, neither of them....

Ours has something purporting to be one.....

....... until I had a look to see what was actually inside.

I have thought for a while that the main function of the air filter is to stop me dropping screws, nuts and other rubbish into the inlet manifold.

Anyway, I gave mine a clean (in white spirit) yesterday, it was rather dirty. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement piece of foam - approx 25 x 10 x 380 mm, to fit one of these I think.

No chance. Those 'filters' are cheap and cheerful and only fulfill the description you identified - stop large things falling into the engine. Buy another one - or better still, buy a filter that filters

Yes, I probably should do that. The original housing was replaced when someone (not me) trod on it ...

It has previously been suggested that something used for filtering water systems in indoor fish tanks will do the trick - might be worth looking for old posts.

I used a kind of fairly open wadding that Cath had in her collection of sewing stuff, and over time it got dirty enough before replacement that it was clearly better than nothing.

Both the above assume that the metal gauze part is still in there, and that whatever you choose cannot possibly get sucked down the inlet (!)

It has also previously been suggested that an air filter designed for a Citroen 2CV will fit on the stub, and actually do something useful. However when I enquired at a Citroen parts specialist they were unaware of a filter for a 2CV that went onto a pipe of that kind of size.

I read with interest about BLACK air cleaner - dirty yes it should be with use but black/oily no! This would indicate oil coming back into the air intake side and this can only come from valve stems or seals. My old 1.5 used to suffer from valve not closing - introduction to gentle hammer proved successful - only short term though!

It's usually from the crankcase breather that connects to the air cleaner

Alternatively, if your silencer has a hole, you get a build up of soot pretty quickly, leading to poor combustion - and soot, which ends up in the air cleaner leading to poor combustion etc.

We had that one recently

Thanks again for comments. It's proving harder to track down on the web a "proper" filter assembly than I had expected. The manual for my engine has the proper Mitsubishi filter assembly but that's designed for installing on a truck.

One option might be this (if the size is right) http://www.hgiparts.com/yanmar-marine-air-filter-assembly/

... although I've not managed to find a replacement filter for that unit yet..

I suspect most of the black stuff on the current foam comes from when I (briefly) had a leak on the silencer a couple of years ago...

I would guess 5cm / 2 inches, but will take a proper measurement next time I am on board.

A proper reusable filter that actually filters

This is a cleaning and oiling kit: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-N-Recharger-Air-Filter-Cleaning-Kit-Cleaner-and-Oil-/351384325678?hash=item51d0234e2e:m:mD5QNHqTmfIOkuXZn-y0TUA

I'd say that you need new glow plugs.

Possibly, although they were replaced not very long ago according to the paperwork I inherited. Testing them is on my to-do list but I rather think that on a freezing day when the engine hadn't been started for seven weeks, that it's pretty much how I would expect a fifty year old diesel engine to behave.

Jeez! My engine starts quicker than that in minus 5 degrees without even preheating the plugs. And that amount of smoke is what I started the thread for!

Clearly I have nothing to worry about.

I'd service the engine if I were you...
