30hp twin cylinder Sabb - any info please?

Thanks for all the information everyone. Much appreciated.

It's not necessarily for Reginald, but a possibility. I haven't actually bought it.

Given the people supposedly casting the new white metal bearing for the Skandia have let us down (they promised to supply it by last xmas), and are now making no commitments on delivery at all, I have to consider what to do about it. Given the sheer noise of the exhaust and the uncertainty about whether it can be fixed, along with the bearing problem, I'm looking at all options. I want to use the boat!

Put the lister you bought into the boat.

Regards kris

Apologies to anyone that was bidding on ebay for Rob18's Sabb 2JGR.

We plonked it into the back of my Renault today and now tucked up in Tony Redshaw's, ready for a bit of fettling prior to installation in NB Freyja ;0) I'm a happy chappy ;0)

Are there any for sale at the moment then?

What's wrong with that lovely Kelvin K2 by HughC?

Its a nice engine I'm sure, I'll have a read when I have time, looks very interesting. But it's a bit too rich for me :(

It's probably big really. Its a bit big for any narrow boat.

What are you building? A narrow boat? What length? You're looking for something vintage rather than a modern compact engine to hide under the floorboards?

It's 40' x 9' , and yeah I would like something a bit interesting for the engine room, but not to specialist. Preferably to be water cooled.

Did you not go for a Sabb in the end?

No, I could never find one actually for sale which is why I was wondering where you though you could get one. The several ads selling them at the time all turned out to be phantom. I bought a Kingfisher KD3 from ebay in the end which was removed two years later when the Gleniffer was ready to go back in. Sold it again for £100! Shame as it would have done you just fine.

Older Listers come up on ebay from time to time, and BMC1800s. Keep an eye on ebay all the time. There is a constant turnover in interesting engines.

HR denotes the gearbox-so its got a Hurth (250?)

That being the case the engine sits approx 7 1/2 in below the bearers and approx 28 in above

Bearers are set  1 inch above the hieght of the prop shaft (centre)

From front of flywheel to gearbox flange is about 1 metre.

Max width of engine about 20 inch with the bearer centres needing to be about 13.5 inch.

Lovely sounding grunty engines. I am biased though as have one myself...

He's still got another available  ?

Now's your chance ;)

Sean from Marine Enterprises was helpful and easy to deal with.

Yep that's the geezer.

The moment has passed. I bought an engine from someone else.

Chop! had the same problem before spotting his on Ebay. I got an engine no problem but never managed to buy some injection pipes and fittings (from the spare parts advertised) to replace the brazed up gas fittings mine had been bodged from.

Hi all,

I've recently brought one of these engines from Marine Enterprises and I'm very happy so far.

I brought it as a replacement for a knackered Lister CE .

The engine went to Paul Redshaw for some prep work before installation. He changed the gearbox for my existing PRM , fitted new fuel pipework, replaced the air filter and alternator and then installed it with Roger Farrington at Braunston boats doing the steel work, and they did a very good job.

Its worth remembering that these engines are designed for ships lifeboats, and as such they would not need to to run for long periods, as opposed to the Sabb 2g series.

To this end these engines are direct injection units, and the injector service interval is only 200 running hours. Also, the owners manual recommends the use of 'road grade diesel'. I've just had my injectors rebuilt and will be refitting them this weekend after my 6 week summer cruise.

There is a series of 4 videos on youtube focused on stripping down the cylinder heads and overhauling a 2j engine which you might find helpful.

So, on the whole I'm very pleased with my new old engine, I lost count of the number of people who admired the noise it was making during the summer and I'm hoping to get much more good service from it.
