Donald Gilchrist
Have been thinking about a change of engine [electric] and was wondering how much I would get for the 4lk with a prm500 gearbox [there is nothing wrong with the engine]
Paul G2
The price of Gardner engines varies tremendously depending on the condition and appearance of the engine. For example, I've seen ragged looking, but purportedly well running, 6LXBs for close to £900, or you can go for a Joe McCool work of art and engineering for £24,000 for the same engine including gearbox. Probably if you posted a couple photos of your engine, you'd have a better chance of getting a realistic answer to your question.
MtB
I'd guess about £2k, provided the sump hasn't corroded through.
zenataomm
Let's see if I understand this .... You want to change the Gardner in your boat for an electric motor? Are you by any chance the same "Gilchrist" (Dr) that worked at BRB Res? Who had an office across from Kate Johnson? Jeremy Clapham
DHutch
Keep the Gardner... ...also, £24k?! Daniel
steamraiser2
Amongst all the Gardner types the LKs are the least valuable. This is only because of the difficulty in obtaining spare parts for them. Lots of bespoke bits if you want to restore one.Worth £1500 to £2000 as a good take out engine at most. As it is easier to find parts the L2s and LWs are the better option. Even the L2s have supply issues these days, particularly cylinder blocks. 6LXBs are not worth £24k. A fully refurbished one, properly done , not a paint and polish job, would cost between £18 to 20k including the purchase of the core engine. 6L3s are £25 to £30k. 8L3Bs are £35 to £45k all fully refurbished of course. Virtually no one is using Gardners commercially in the UK these days, except the odd fairground operator. In the commercial marine world the larger Gardners are still in use world wide although in slow decline. Malta and Egypt are hot spots for them, as is New Zealand. Athy
. Virtually no one is using Gardners commercially in the UK these days, except the odd fairground operator. Also some 'bus operators - although Embling's in Cambs, all of whose double-deckers were Gardner-powered, were closed down during 2015. I don't know whether the fleet has been sold on or scrapped.
