Lister FR2 fitted in NB JUDD

MR-BRU

Featured Posts

Hi Everybody.

Thought we should update this board.

Jim Cooper the original first owner had a listing about JUDD on this forum.

We Colin & Chris Billingham are the second owners of this super much loved Orion built Tug Boat.

It has been improved and modified over the 3 years we have owned him "NOT A HER"

Would anyone know if there is a register on the web for either Orion Tugs or narrow boats fitted with Lister Fr2s.

Judd is 62ft and quite a heavy build, I see lots of enquiries on forum boards about the power of the FR2 we all know it is only a 16hp engine the point most people miss about this engine is the torque power if set with the correct size prop will haul in excess of 50 tons all day long.

I do a bit of boat moving with Judd and it performs very well. Last February we towed ex-British Waterways Butty Barnes to Gailey total weight was close on 50 ton and we had over one inch of ice did not take us much longer than normal.

That's it for now Merry Christmas to all.

MR-BRU, did we meet you on the South Straftford early in the summer? You were coming up one of the Lowsonford locks as we were waiting to come down and we had a brief chat about FRs. There are are more of them about on the canals than you might think. I'm lousy with boat names, but Moominmama thinks it was Judd.

Hi.

Yes that was us on the Stratford.

I remember you told me about a register for FRs or am I confused.

We will be up the Stratford at the end of March via South Staffs & Worcester through to Dudley via Stourbridge Gas St and on to Stratford.

Have now got straight through exhaust with a fat double skinned funnel . sounds good.

Regards Colin & Chris Billingham

Welcome Colin.

A man after my own heart. I consider both my boats male too. REGINALD especially gets upset when someone refers to him as 'her'...

Dunno about an FR club or Orion register. Lovely boats though, Orions.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the reply see around I expect.

Regards Colin & Chris Billingham

Yes, that was me who told you about the mailing list. I set it up, but it's not very active I'm afraid.

Have a good trip. ON our current plans, out paths won't cross this year: when we get back to the canals at Gayton, we're heading straight for the Llangollen by the shortest route.

Cheers,

MP.

HI,

We have had our 1953 FR2 16HP fitted to our narrow boat Alzark No2 for the last 25 years.

I good motor for canals and Summer river levels.

Have used for towing another 60 foot boat no problems.

Cheers.

I'm getting old and easily confused .......

Was it the FR or the CE that was nicknamed the engine that almost broke Lister? I thought the FR.

And which was "The Square Box"? I thought the CE.

But then again I used to be young, invincible and never wrong.

I was pleased to see you and Judd passing our house in Upwell (twice) this weekend - the first boat movement here for about three weeks unless I've missed one. That was me who hailed you just by the butcher's shop and the garage today. I must say that the FR sounds pleasingly deep-throated, and I must have heard you coming a quarter of a mile away!

Isn't Well Creek closed for dredging at the moment?

Interesting. The closure notice:

http://www.middlelevel.gov.uk/docs/Navigation/navigationsuspension_river%20nene(old%20course)_well%20creek.pdf

doesn't mention weekend opening. Do you know if it's official?

Cheers,

MP.

I haven't the foggiest. But the dredging is being done by a huge JCB jobbie from the bank, whose bucket discharges the spoil into high-sided farm trailers which, when filled, are towed away by tractors (I think there are three of these combines working in rotation); so the waterway is not obstructed except when dredging is actually taking place. A couple of local roads are closed, though.

Hi Athy,

JUDD found a new owner last autumn,

I think it is now moored at March. We met the couple whilst they were on their previous boat last year up at Leighton Buzzard, and have kept in touch since. Nice people !

They are well pleased with Judd and I suspect you will see it out and about a lot.

Cheers. Mick

Thanks for the update. It's sad to learn that MR-BRU didn't keep Judd for very long - about 4 years by the sound of it - but from what I saw, the new owners have got a boat to be proud of.

Hi,

I do spend some time on this type of engine as they crop up - just delivered a lovely Lister Blackstone FR2 a couple of weeks ago for fitting in a canal boat. I have broken a few engines and may have some spares (limited of course for these engines) and have made up the tools for cylinder head and liner pulling and can travel if required.

Somewhere in the LB stuff I have I seem to recall some charts for sorting some of these things out, patience will be needed as it may take some time to dig out - also it may apply to marine use only.
