Why is a weed hatch called a weed hatch

It's not called the carrier bag hatch because weed hatches were invented before carrier bags.

I got a large clump of reeds around the prop once, going through Rugeley "tunnel". Opened the weed hatch and began to pull the reeds through, when a frog jumped up out of the reeds and out of the counter. Scared the living daylights out of me.
