Morning all,

I need to replace the lip seal on the propshaft of a 50 by 10 liverpool boat(2006) as it has started to weep. Has anyone any idea the shaft size, inner housing size and seal dept? Unfortunately Collinwood are on Holidays till 3rd September.

Probably a Vetus stern seal with a 30mm shaft. Measuring the shaft isn't too difficult. If you have the older type of seal then you will have to buy the whole thing from Vetus. The newer ones do have replaceable shaft seals, they only cost a few squids from any bearing supplier. Some folk do reckon they can do the job with boat in the water, but I'm a coward, with short arms so wouldn't try it.

Have you tried putting grease in via the alum screw.use silicone grease and spin shaft as you put it in.

Seal can be changed in water no problem. Push shaft back through stern and tie piece rag round shaft in water. Push it against hull and hardly a drop will enter boat. Done it several times.

Same here. No problem afloat when we did ours.

The Liverpool wide beam boats usually have a 35mm shaft system.

The Vetus replacement seals are expensive, and of late, unreliable. We are replacing them with a complete rubber seal, this can be seen on our website.

This sound like nonsense and blatant advertising. What evidence do you have that Vetus seals are unreliable please?

According to your website your seals have been on the market for 2 years without any reported failures. That's hardly any time at all and certainly not long enough to know if they're any good. The Vetus glands have been around for about 15 years.

Sorry, but if you're going to advertise your products on this forum and slag off rival manufacturers products in the process, then don't be surprised if you're taken to task.
