Zoeb
Hi All, If you use 2-pack epoxy primer (post sandbalsting), do you have to put 2-pack epoxy over the top of this when you come to re-do the hull? (I know the lifetime is meant to be alot longer therefore the need to re-do should be less). And, am I right in thinking you have to put 2-pack expoxy onto bare steel, therefore to re-do the hull you would need to sandblast again and re-apply? thanks! nicknorman
As I understand it, you can put bitumen on top of epoxy, but not the other way round. You can re coat epoxy with new epoxy but normally the requirement is to abrade the surface (as well as cleaning off any rust from the exposed bits). peterboat
Stick with the 2 pack epoxy as Nick says its diesel proof and will last much longer Peter
BEngo
You should check with your particular two-pack makers data sheets, but generally it's a case of pressure wash, abrade anything above water with a wire brush in an angle grinder (the below water-line bit seems to be adequately abraded by the pressure wsher as it gets the weed off), attack any rusty patches (scrapes etc) with an angel grinder and sanding disc to get bright metal. Then re-coat. We put two more coats of two-pack on, but YMMV. You can put bitumen over two-pack, but it's cosmetic and you will not be able to touch in any scrapes the next time, except with more bitumen or a re-blast. Neil Smith
Are you saying the hull has been blasted then epoxy primed, if so you can put epoxy pitch over it, if not done yet then blast and epoxy pitch on bare steel as soon as poss.
