Is that why you have 2 Mike????????????

Oy!

Dangerously close to the mark. On more than one occasion I've returned to the boat after a week back in Reading working to find it not there.

After a bit of brain dredging I usually find I've moved it since and forgotten, duh.....

Hey you ARE still alive!!

While we're on the subject of birthday pressies, the one I expect you sent me never arrived...

Still alive. I've been busy getting rid of my life and making lists of all the things I need to have ready for my move!

If you want a pressie you'll have to come fetch it!

So ... I've packed the following (plus a few other essentials):

Adjustable spanner

Hammer

Saw

WD40

Penetrating oil * sniggers *

Blow lamp

Pipe wrench

Multimeter

DC clamp meter

Gaffa tape

Axe

Bin liners

Goat

Gin

Jubilee clips

Lanterns

Music radio

Non-stick saucpan

Oil - engine, gearbox, cooking

Rubber gloves

Scrubbing brush

Tube gun (for sealants)

Umbrella

Vacuum cleaner (also bags and filters)

Work gloves

Xylophone (OK, X is a hard one)(as with G - perhaps you could teach the goat to play the xylophone on long dark Winter nights?)

Yak (if goat turns out to be a failure)

The Quorn sausage was veto'd in favour of Bacon and Black Pudding from the Farmers Market!

The goat ain't happy sharing with the Yak, but luckily I've got the Rubber gloves, scrubbing brush and the Tube gun to deal with that little problem!

Is it OK to swap the Xylophone for my Ukulele (if that doesn't put people off I need to up my game)

We got embarrassingly caught out last week when the gear cable snapped and had to call out RCR. Always carry at least one on board but overlooked it this trip so; make sure you have a tele flex cable stashed somewhere. Easy to fit yourself and get on your way.

Thinking about it, all you really need are -

1. Mooring chains & rope so you can moor up - through choice or breakdown

2. Tinned food and water - so you don't go hungry if middle of nowhere

3. Mobile phone with Internet, then if you do breakdown you can call for help.

The rest of the tools will depend upon your own skill level.

I see that penetrating oil raised a snigger, well blow lamp made me giggle.

Phil

If you forget the penetrating oil, could you use KY jelly instead?

Yup, don't worry about the list - another man will come to help out when you're stuck wink.png

Not knowing its history, we had our 'stuffing box' repacked this Summer, it was dripping more than usual, which stopped after David Schweizer (whom we met by chance and I hope he has recovered!) told me how to tighten the bolts (well.... I had not done it before) and I turned the nuts a bit, and indeed it stopped the dripping. A couple of weeks later we asked someone to have a go at seeing what was there; three rings were removed with a packing extractor (bit of wire with a hook), the fourth being left in place (as if you pull that one out water will gush in), and three new rings of Aquafax packing were tamped in to replace those removed. I'm not sure how many years this will last, but at least we know now that it was done in July 2015. Every time something is done to the boat I make a note of it.

If you don't know when your stern gland packing was done last, it could be an idea to do as we did?

I've got quite a few spanner thingies, some of them seem to be adjustable.

I've got a greaser tube, but maybe I need to check that it's the right kinda thing for boats ....
